Split ring resonator (SRR) structures based terahertz (THz) metamaterials with different gap dimensions are fabricated on polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) films by parallel laser micro-lens array (MLA) lithography and lift-off process. The narrowband resonance is achieved in single layer SRR samples. A series of single layer SRR samples are fabricated with different gap sizes to obtain successive narrowband...
Quantum information science aims to harness uniquely quantum mechanical properties to enhance measurement and information technologies, and to explore fundamental aspects of quantum physics. Of the various approaches to quantum computing [1], photons are particularly appealing for their low-noise properties and ease of manipulation at the single qubit level [2,3]. Encoding quantum information in photons...
A microstrip grid array antenna that radiates a pencil beam is reported. The prototype was designed and fabricated on RT/duriod 5880 substrate with the physical size of 40×40×0.787 mm3 and the number of 16 radiating elements. Measured results show that the microstrip grid array antenna achieved 4.1% impedance bandwidth and 15.5-dBi gain at 24.25 GHz.
This paper presents a novel coordinated algorithm, Fast Distributed State Estimation with Linear Coordination (FDSELC), considering Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) measurements at both subsystem and coordination levels. At the subsystem level, the estimators apply augmented Fast Decoupled State Estimation algorithm to reduce the computational time at the first step. At the coordination level, linear...
Traditionally, compressed sensing (CS) has been presented considering real-valued data. There has been some recent interest in reconstruction algorithms for CS that can handle and take advantage of complex-valued data. This kind of data is common in terahertz (THz) imaging. CS reconstruction in such a case can benefit from extra information provided by phase or real and imaginary parts of the data...
The purpose of this paper is to present the design approach of a robust damping controller of thyristor-controlled series compensator (TCSC) for systems with multiple operating points. The design objective is to find a common output feedback controller for TCSC which could increase system damping of power system oscillations under different system operating points. The robust damping control problem...
In this paper a 60 GHz antenna-in-package with end-fire radiation in LTCC is presented. Compared with the method mounting the chip on the side of the antenna package, the proposed antenna-in-package (AiP) configuration carries the chip on top of it to greatly save the area of RF front-end. In addition, the symmetric posts are introduced to widen the bandwidth. The metal match rings are added to smooth...
The practice and future plans of smart grids in Europe are discussed in this paper. Firstly, the features of current power grid in Europe are introduced. Then, the plan of future European power grid with high penetration of renewable energy is introduced. After that, the practice of smart operation of interstate power grid is given. Finally, the most concerned issues and plans for the smart operation...
A new type of antenna, called 45° linearly polarized grid array antenna, is proposed for 24-GHz automotive radar sensors. Two such antennas are designed and fabricated on RT/duriod 5880 substrate for single-ended and differential signal operations, respectively. The single-ended antenna exhibits 6.8% impedance bandwidth and 14-dBi gain and the differential antenna displays 5.9% impedance bandwidth...
Potassium titanyl phoshate (KTP) crystal has superior nonlinear properties as well as excellent electro-optic characteristics. In this paper, a single KTP crystal used as both intracavity voltage-increased electro-optic Q-switch and optical parametric generator simultaneously is researched theoretically. The external applied voltage and optimum type-II phase matching angles for KTP crystal is theoretically...
Bandgap properties of hybrid structures combining defects and multiple heterostructures containing negative-index materials are investigated by optical transfer matrix method. This photonic heterostructure consists of different one-dimensional photonic crystals. The results obtained show that the zero-averaged refractive-index gaps can be substantially extended when the constituent ID photonic crystals...
The purpose of this paper is to present a 2D depth-averaged model that includes the effects of streamline curvature under orthogonal curvilinear coordinates for simulating flows in channel bends. The proposed model uses an orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system efficiently and accurately to simulate the flow field with irregular boundaries. As for the numerical solution procedure, The SIMPLEC solution...
Optimization of shrinkage and crack resistance performance of Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC) is investigated due to ECC with higher drying shrinkage. Free shrinkage tests were used to research the influence of fiber content, superplasticizer (SP) and finely ground quartz powder (QP) on the total drying shrinkage value of ECC. Restrained drying shrinkage tests (ring tests) were used to research...
This paper presents my preliminary thoughts on the development of antenna-in-package (AiP) technology for single-chip tri-band radio devices operating in the 2.4, 5, and 60 GHz bands based on microstrip patch antennas by exploring the novel patch-by-patch and patch-in-patch schemes. It is found that impedance bandwidth is not wide enough to cover the whole 60 GHz band. Thus, either bandwidth enhancement...
This study presents a heuristic approach to solve the chance-constrained stochastic optimal power problem, considering Gaussian loads, non-Gaussian wind generations, as well as the correlation among these power injections. Such a heuristic approach starts from the result of a deterministic optimal power flow problem, then converts all the chance constraints into equivalent deterministic constraints...
A novel anti-ESD RF SOI LIGBT with buried P-type layer (BPL) was proposed for improvement of its forward block characteristic. The proposed anti-ESD BPL RF SOI LIGBT consists of an additional buried P-type layer inserted between buried oxide layer and N-drift region based on the conventional RF SOI LIGBT structure and a built-in self-ESD-protection structure introduced in P-well region. When the proposed...
We demonstrate 437 GHz optical pulse train generation based on grating coupled external cavities using InAs/InP quantum dots as the gain material. It is the highest repetition rate ever produced by QD lasers.
This paper presents control strategies with specific control targets designed for generator- and grid-side voltage-sourced converters (VSCs) of wind turbines with permanent magnetic synchronous generator (WT-PMSGs) as well as those for rectifier- and inverter-side VSCs of multi-terminal VSC-HVDC (MTDC) transmission system. With the proposed coordination control of VSCs in the WT-PMSGs and VSC-HVDC...
Although considerable effort has been devoted to duplicate document detection (DDD) and its applications, there is very limited study on the optimization of its time-consuming functions. An experimental analysis which is conducted on a million Grant Proposal documents from the nsfc.gov.cn shows that even by using the clustering and the sampling methods, the speed of DDD is still quite slow. By analyzing...
Some novel periodic structures with different internal nanopatterns are numerically and experimentally demonstrated based on multi-exposure two-beam interference lithography. Two-dimensional quasi-crystal structures were fabricated with precisely controlled exposure directions and doses. The experiment results show such a fabrication technology is very promising for making diverse large-area submicron...
