In most bony fishes vertebral column strain during locomotion is almost exclusively in the intervertebral joints, and when these joints move there is the potential to store and release strain energy. Since cartilaginous fishes have poorly mineralized vertebral centra, we tested whether the vertebral bodies undergo substantial strain and thus may be sites of energy storage during locomotion. We measured...
We propose a six degree-of-freedom multi-body approach for modeling and simulation of biologically-inspired (or Biomimetic) autonomous underwater vehicles (BAUVs), i.e., artificial fish. The proposed approach is based on considering the BAUV as comprised of multiple rigid bodies interlinked through joints; the external force and torque on each rigid body in the BAUV is expressed using quasi-steady...
In this work, heavy ion and energetic proton single event upset (SEU) cross sections are measured for a 4 Mbit CMOS, static random access memory (SRAM). Heavy ion upset cross sections were used to define a dosimetry model suitable for use in a Monte-Carlo, physics-based transport code, which is shown to be predictive for experimentally measured proton single event upset (SEU) cross sections. The simulator...
Experimental thermal neutron and alpha soft error test results of a 4 Mbit SRAM fabricated on a 0.25 mum process are evaluated using Vanderbilt University's RADSAFE toolkit. The capabilities of the radiation transport code are demonstrated by accurately reproducing experimental results and predicting operational soft error rates for the memory.
An underlying logic links the environment, resource productivity, innovation, and competitiveness. Properly designed environmental standards can spark off new developments that reduce the total cost of a product and/or increase its value. The shift from pollution control to prevention is a necessary first step, but companies need to go further. Outside pressures will also motivate a company to...
