Based on a recent work of Ding, Wang, and Xiong, we present some cyclotomic constructions of zero-difference balanced (ZDB) functions, which interpret the previous construction proposed by Cai, Zeng, Helleseth, Tang, and Yang. The resulted ZDB functions can be used to generate optimal constant composition codes and perfect difference systems of sets with new parameters.
The mobile social network (MSN) can be considered as a system which provides a variety of data delivery services involving the social relationship among mobile users. Mobile social networks have the surprising property of being "searchable": Ordinary users contact with each other more frequently when they have more social features in common. In this paper, we first define a priority relationship...
We seek to extend the idea of technology for education beyond digital interfaces, to include the practice of building technological devices in the classroom, to integrate complex concepts, and values such as sustainability. We provide a brief overview of the discipline of Design and Technology Education, where the process of designing and building of technological artifacts is a pedagogical approach,...
This pilot study explores the use of serendipitous learning of mathematics in a group of Further Education students. Data was gathered from 28 students within a computer games design unit on a computer science course. The data was gathered using both quantitative and qualitative methods. The findings indicated that even at this early stage that student's view of mathematics had changed in a positive...
Through the study of the Bejaia's University students' marks in Computer Science, we want to show the interest of the Statistical Implicative Analysis (SIA). This method, developed by Régis Gras and his collaborators, is used to discover and analyze the most relevant implications between different studied modules. CHIC (Cohesive Hierarchical Implicative Classification) is a software implementing most...
The previous two decades have seen the successful deployment of Computational Science programs in universities across the globe. These programs are aimed at training scientists and engineers to tackle problems requiring interdisciplinary approaches to finding solutions to scientific and engineering problems and the development of new computing, as exemplified by the co-design approach to exascale...
Motivating students to learn mathematical concepts and assessing their performance and understanding in an adequate and timely manner are constant concerns for instructors of mathematics. Web-based systems provide an important, flexible instructional tool that can be used for any kind of learning at any time. Our goal here is to introduce and discuss two of the main web-based homework systems available...
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of Personal Learning Space (PLS) on learners' online self-regulated learning capability and online collaborative learning level in a face-to-face undergraduate course. 20 sophomores were randomly chosen to use PLS during their course learning. One-group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental research with time series was adopted in the study. Students...
Tubular and tree structures appear very commonly in biomedical images like vessels, microtubules or neuron cells. Minimal paths have been used for long as an interactive tool to segment these structures as cost minimizing curves. The user usually provides start and end points on the image and gets the minimal path as output. These minimal paths correspond to minimal geodesics according to some adapted...
Lamar University's Students Advancing through Involvement in Research Student Talent Expansion Program (STAIRSTEP) received a 2013 Star Award from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for making exceptional contributions towards closing the gaps in higher education in Texas. The project is funded by a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant. STAIRSTEP'S goals are to recruit students, retain...
Learning experiences in informal Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) educational settings, such as camps, provide significant benefits for secondary students such as awareness of STEM subjects and careers along with increasing enthusiasm, self-efficacy, and content knowledge. To expand the number of students majoring in STEM subjects and entering careers in STEM fields, a two-week...
A considerable body of research examines people's perceptions of the nature of science. There is also extensive research about what those perceptions are for teachers, and what strategies can be used to change them. There is, however, very little information about what these perceptions may be in the case of computer science. In fact, computer scientists struggle to agree on a definition of their...
A comprehensive examination of the mathematics courses undergraduate engineering majors take in their first two years, and their success in those courses was conducted to determine the impact of course level and grade on student persistence in engineering. Six hundred fifty five, full-time freshmen enrolled as engineering majors at a major university in the Southwest United States participated in...
Today, in the 21st century, knowledge of science, technology and especially engineering are necessary to make informed decisions in most aspects of everyday life and the demand to fill jobs in these areas, especially engineering, is growing rapidly. Recent research indicates that a majority of college students who enter Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) majors became interested...
Numerous inquiries from K-12 educators across the state of New Jersey have indicated that defining and implementing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education has become a challenge to the K-12 education sector. Many of these K-12 educators approach STEM disciplines as if each one exists in isolation from the others and they do not integrate the content and skills of the disciplines...
As a result of the growth of formal and informal pre-college engineering opportunities, many students are enrolling in university engineering programs with significant prior exposure to engineering ideas and practices. This study explores how participation in pre-college engineering programs and activities affects the experiences of students in a first-year engineering program. Twenty-three students...
This report presents the results of the research, study and formation of the array of archival documents as a base for the biography of academician Guriy Ivanovich Marchuk, a distinguished Russian scientist and organizer of science.
The main goal of a new publication is to place on historical Rafael Yusupov, Mikhail Vous record the contribution of St Petersburg organizations, research schools, scholars and specialists in developing informatics and cybernetics.
I got lucky with my teachers in science. The supervisor of my degree work was Andrey Bers. I wrote my Ph.D. thesis under the direction of Igor Pottosin. The informal adviser of my doctoral thesis was Andrey Ershov. In the paper I wish to commemorate my teachers that were ones of the first Russian programmers and did a lot for formation and development of computer science in Russia.
The openness movement supported by the development of information technologies, the empowerment of knowledge-sharing communities of practice across the network, as well as the need to ensure higher quality education, provide the framework for the "Col-laboratori interuniversitari de recursos d'aprenentatge en xarxa" (CIRAX) program. The CIRAX project aims to promote and consolidate a teaching...
