In this demonstration, we will present a novel gesture input device that combines both finger and hand position tracking in a convenient wearable package and its applications in gaming and beyond. We will place a special emphasis on applications where this devices excels and present areas where we would like to see it expand and the associated challenges.
Improvising Conscious: Davian Bead Game is an experimental work of intermedia performance: a cognitive science fiction which addresses questions of situated consciousness and pre- & post-human identity. The core of Improvising Conscious: Davian Bead Game is game played with an alien intelligence, and a lecture by Jennifer Arnstay, Professor of Material and Analogical Eco-Cognition visiting from...
We present a tool to assist the collection and representation of playtesting data such as players' in-game behaviour (e.g. tracking their movements) and physiological measures (e.g. tracking their arousal state).
We present a novel serious game prototype for the purpose of job interview skills training. The serious game allows for a wide variety of realistic interview scenarios to be easily created and simulated.
The Healthcare services providers and medical schools have only recently recognized the potential of simulation as a training tool, focusing primarily on realistic standardized-patient simulations (for problem solving and decision-making skills) and task trainers and immersive simulations (for surgical skills). We are making use of Game Engine tools for developing virtual-world scenarios for emergent...
The design and evaluation of Neurosurgical simulators has heretofore emphasized the training of ‘surgical technical skills’. Such commercial platforms generally exercise tool use and other low level sensori-motor tasks such as targeting and navigation for training surgical residents. We report on the development of a set of modules implemented within Digital Extreme's Evolution Engine, making use...
Exercise is an important activity that allows maintaining an optimal health for executing daily activities impacting the quality of life, these may be health-care oriented, physical therapy and fitness, among others. The engagement on physical activity requires intrinsic motivation, which may be affected due to the exercising characteristics, such as repetitive tasks, lack of time and proper feedback,...
We experimentally evaluate display size in arcade style "bullet hell" shooter games. Two scaling methods were compared: uniform, and non-uniform. Results indicate a strongly linear increase of performance with display diagonal size. This was more pronounced with non-uniform scaling.
This paper describes work in progress regarding an effort to create a serious game with the sole purpose of cultural competency training. The serious game includes a research tool (a scenario editor) which will have the ability to build a conversation and interpret and respond to questions or answers from the game player. Primarily, these responses will be based on pre-defined cultural characteristics...
The method used to display game information, either overlay or in-game, in first-person shooters, likely has a measurable impact on player performance. Quantitative research is needed in this area, as game designers are pushing for heads-up displays to be as minimal as possible. This is especially important for the smaller screens (such as tablets and even cellular devices), which are now being targeted...
Actergy, the time-integral of energy, is employed in a human kinetic sensing system. This paper presents hardware and signal-processing mathematics to measure actergy in a health science, training or gaming environment, as a more detailed metric of performance than reflex time-delay. Fundamental quantities of Integral-Kinematics are compared alongside actergy, with further potential applications in...
A 3-dimensional augmediated reality (AR) environment was designed, where users can physically walk through space, and by looking through AR glasses can see and interact with hidden veillance flux produced by cameras. Surveillance cameras, physically attached to a room, as well as handheld and body-worn cameras, each emit veillance flux and have a veillance field — a mathematical formulation of their...
This paper introduces two new categories of players, an equalization player, with the goal to minimize the score gap between the opponents, and a variation enhancement player, with the goal to maximize the same. In addition, a complementary player type is added to the classic max-player game, called the min-player, along with a mathematical formalization of basic strategies, yielding a new algorithm...
New technologies enable the realization of game ideas that previously only could be implemented through significant effort. This paper presents the design, implementation and verification of a generic version of the A∗ pathfinding algorithm, with the capability to navigate in multidimensional space, thereby given a 5D sparse matrix, enabling the creation of 3D worlds in computer games that could be...
This paper describes the initial development of a Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) entertainment application called iMind that aims to expand the creative potential for this emergent medium. We detail the development stages of two iMind working prototypes and discuss issues regarding these interfaces in cultural and creative media experiences. The iMind project is investigating a novel interaction that...

Here we analyze and provide a description of our ongoing work that couples an online learning management system and gamification to provide an engaging and motivating learning experience for health professions students.
Within the lower member the knee plays an important role in daily locomotor activities; however, several factors such as sedentarism, lack of exercise or incorrect postures may lead to possible musculoskeletal problems. The global impact of massif growth of mobile market, smartphones are becoming a suitable tool for providing information and services to users, resulting in increasing adoption of e-health...
Mindfulness practices have been shown to improve various health related aspects of patient lifestyles including the reduction of depressive relapse in those who suffer from depression [4] and reduction of perceived pain in chronic pain patients [3]. Mindfulness meditation has also been shown to reduce stress and encourage relaxation [10] which is naturally beneficial for many demographics, including...
This paper presents an application of game refinement theory to score limited sport games badminton and table tennis, in order to observe the effect of recent rule changes on their sophistication. We apply the game refinement measure of information from world class tournaments. The results show game refinement values for badminton and table tennis. Although not considered in the present study, it...
