The paper presents an analysis of biographies of all women who have been elected to the constitutional tribunal since its creation in 1985. the interest in gender regarding the tribunal, results from the fact that while more and more women in Poland study law and work in the legal field (particularly in the common courts), as well as perform increasingly important roles in public life they, nevertheless, hold a small number of high positions both within and outside of the legal realm. the paper assumes that gender is a significant factor of social diversification, which determines the actions of individuals and their chances in life. the article attemptsto answer what prevents women from occupying high and prestigious positions such as that of a judge of the constitutional tribunal. the analysis shows that regardless of different biographies, female judges of the tribunal share a number of common traits, allowing to detect certain regularities concerning the election of women to the tribunal. the women in question are distinguished by obtaining, during the course of their professional careers, a variety of resources which are considered particularly valuable in the legal universe (i.e. academic titles). a lso, occupying a a senior position in other social spheres often works in their favour (politics, university posts, etc.). the research leads to the conclusion that the factors that separate women from high positions in the legal field are also typical of other areas where women’s careers are blocked, and the tribunal is, therefore, just another example of a broader occurrence.
