Primarily the schematic facial stimuli were used in the studies exploring the specificity of the detection of the emotional faces against the background of distractors by Öhman and co-workers. In the present study it was examined a validity of selection of that stimulus material. The procedure comprises three types of instructions addressed to three different groups of participants. The good level of validity of the chosen stimuli to their assumed signalling role was demonstrated in happy and angry faces, and on the slightly lower level in sad one. According to results the neutral face is aprojective stimulus. In the subject opinion the expression of neutral face conveyed different emotional signals, and different valence, what is connected with the emotional state of the receiver. In the light of these findings the representativeness of the neutral face as a 'control material' for emotional faces is discussed.
