The properties of a machinable, high refractive index, low-loss, low-cost material are investigated. Both a THz-TDS and a Vector Network Analyzer (0.75–1.1 THz) are used to characterize the material and precisely obtain the absorption coefficient. Fresnel lenses are fabricated with a micro milling system to demonstrate the shaping capabilities of the aluminium nitride based ceramic.
This paper presents the switching of slow light properties of one dimensional spoof surface plasmon polariton structures with liquid crystals. The phase transition of the liquid crystal is induced thermally.
We discuss the improved performance of a microfluidic cell for chemical detection. The sensitivity is increased by placing the microfluidic cell in photonic crystal cavity. The insecticide methomyl is used as an exemplary chemical.
We report on the design, simulation and fabrication of polymer-composite micro-Golay cells for THz and far-infrared detection. Preliminary experimental results showed that the cell's mechanical, thermal and optical properties make it an excellent candidate for pneumatic THz detectors. The theoretical performance of the cell was modelled and simulated in COMSOL, and its expected performance was found...
A free-standing periodic array of subwavelength rectangular apertures has been designed to exhibit peak transmission which is dominated by localized aperture resonance in the THz region. By varying the incident angle, Wood's anomalies can be introduced; the observed effect upon the localized aperture resonance is reported and compared to FDTD simulations in the absence of plasmonic surface modes....
A low-cost process for the fabrication of spoof surface plasmon polariton (SPP) structures, designed to operate in the THz frequency region, is shown. The process uses microfabricated templates for the fabrication of structured surfaces which are sputter coated with metal. The propagation of the THz radiation along the structured surfaces, coupled using knife-edge scattering, is characterized using...
Gold membranes with large arrays of sub-μm holes were fabricated and optically characterized. The fabrication is a combination of a bottom-up, self-assembly based patterning technique, Nanosphere Lithography (NSL), and standard microfabrication. This was achieved by 1) up-scaling of the deposition of close-packed bead monolayers to 4″ wafer substrates, 2) controlled bead size reduction, 3) etching...
Efficient subgraph queries in large databases are a time-critical task in many application areas as e.g. biology or chemistry, where biological networks or chemical compounds are modeled as graphs. The NP-completeness of the underlying subgraph isomorphism problem renders an exact subgraph test for each database graph infeasible. Therefore efficient methods have to be found that avoid most of these...
China's economy is experiencing rapid urbanization involving a large number of migrants from rural areas to urban areas who leave their cultivated land idle. A well-functioning cultivated land market is needed to increase the efficiency of land as a production factor. The purpose of this study is to investigate the cultivated land market in rural China based on a case study in Hebei, a province in...
The recent actions stemming from the Third Plenary Meeting of the 17th Party's Congress of the CCP Central Committee in China, including allowing farmers to transfer their land use rights, commonly known as the Land Use Right Market, represent a big step in both rural land system reform and economic reform. Based on an empirical study and the approach of logistic analysis, this paper introduces the...
We propose a novel model-driven application-level encryption solution to protect the privacy and confidentiality of health data in response to the growing public concern about the privacy of health data. Domain experts specify sensitive data which are to be protected by encryption in the application's domain model. Security experts specify the cryptographic parameters used for the encryption in a...
In recent years, comprehensive studies of protein and domain networks have produced large amounts of interaction data. Further work has revealed that alternative splicing is a major cause of the observed protein and interaction diversity. Special microarrays now allow for measuring gene expression at the exon level, which enables the identification of alternative splicing events. We developed the...
In this work maximum concentrations of the impurities hydrogen chloride and hydrogen sulfide in synthetic wood gas for operation of a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) at different working temperatures and flow conditions are reported. Additionally, an analysis of the influence of the impurity concentrations during the heating up and cooling down phases of the SOFC is given. The paper also deals with wood...
With the dramatic advances made in Microsystems industry, System-on-a-Package (SOP) technology holds promise in terms of reduction in size, cost, and improved performance. To be able to achieve such benefits in an integrated system, it is necessary not to compromise the overall reliability of the system. Therefore, the SOP technology will require up-front system-level design-for-reliability approaches...
Charged particles channeled in crystals traverse nearly periodic trajectories, which produce radiation that has spectral peaks at photon energies determined by the particle energy and the periodicity of the motion. This effect is analogous to the radiation enhancement that occurs when a magnetic undulator is placed in a storage ring. For ??=10 to 100, the period of the motion is several hundred to...
