A dual-wavelength fiber laser based on thinned FBG for sensing refractive index is demonstrated by interrogating the separation of the two lasing wavelengths. The refractive index resolution of ∼10−5 is achieved.
It's the first time to comprehensively and theoretically analyze the effect of the phase fluctuation on the shape of Brillouin phase spectrum, and the first time to design a new experimental setup to fully cancel phase fluctuation induced measurement errors.
Phase fluctuation in the downlink and uplink of a bidirectional analog fiber link is simultaneously cancelled in our proposal based on frequency mixing. Phase drift of 86ps/31ps for 2.4GHz signal is reduced to 3.2ps/2.5ps after 25-km SMF transmission.
Photonic graphene, photonic crystal with honeycomb lattice is studied in the work. Using both finite element simulations and microwave experiments, we studied the existence of the edge modes at different edges of this “photonic graphene”. The edge states are observed experimentally on the bearded interfaces of photonic crystals. The physics of the occurrence of these edge modes are discussed and we...
We propose a class of Alamouti-like Orthogonal Space-Time Block Codes (STBC) for two additional information bits without source such as power, bandwidth and time slot. To maintain the full rank property of the coding gain matrix, we propose a set of STBCs for 4 transmit antennas transmission to transmit one additional information bit achieving rate-9/8. Another orthogonal STBC code with rate-1 is...
Intensity modulated probe is utilized in coherent BOTDA sensor to reduce chromatic dispersion effect instead of phase modulated probe. Reduction of ∼6-MHz decoding error in Brillouin gain spectrum is achieved along 40-km sensing distance.
The geometry of magnetocaloric effect (MCE) alloys is of great importance to achieve high cooling performance of the magnetic regenerator The parallel thin plates are proven as the possible largest potential for efficient heat transfer [1]. The La(Fe, Si)13-based magnetocaloric plates with a thickness about 0 5 mm are usually fabricated by a so-called thermal decomposition reaction technique in powder...
Magnetic refrigeration based on the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) is an environmentally friendly and energy efficient solid state cooling technology compared with conventional vapor compression approach In recent years, the interest in large MCE materials including Gd5Si4−xGex, LaFe13-xSix, MnFeP(As, Ge), Ni-Mn-based Heusler alloys, and rare-earth manganites has grown considerably due to their potential...
This paper presents an improved low-speed axial-flux-modulated(AFM) magnetic-geared permanent magnet in-wheel motor with high torque density for electric vehicles (EVs). In the original AFM motor, there are two air-gaps between the stator and the special iron segments. The improved motor has only one air-gap between them. The performances of the proposed motor are compared with the radial-flux-modulated...
A photonic scheme to generate microwave signals with hybrid pulse-position modulation and binary phase shift keying format is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Hybrid PPM-BPSK signals with 0.1ns symbol period and 20GHz carrier frequency are obtained.
We propose a transmission system based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) effect and injection locked distributed-feedback (DFB) laser to achieve optical single sideband (OSSB) modulation.
A passive approach for phase fluctuation cancellation of anonymous microwave signal transmission is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Phase drift of 54-ps for 2.45-GHz signals is reduced to 3.8-ps after 10-km SMF transmission.
Motor current signature analysis (MCSA) is a common practice in industry for finding motor faults. However, because of small modulations caused by faults and high noise contamination, it is difficult to quantify the modulation in measured signals which is dominated by the supply frequency, higher order harmonics and noise. In this paper a modulation signal bispectrum (MSB) is investigated to detect...
A second version ASIC for front-end detector readout, TIMPIC-II, has been developed for Solid-State Photomultiplier (SSPM) based PET applications. It uses the previously developed and evaluated time-based-readout (TBR) architecture. However, several major changes have been made to make TIMPIC-II more flexible and suited for PET applications, including adding a common energy trigger to select the true...
We report 16.2-Tb/s transmission over 32×79.1-km spans of field fiber using optical superchannels with DP-QPSK modulated subcarriers. The achieved capacity-distance product of 40.9-Pb/s-km is the highest reported to date for a field trial.
In this paper, we present the first-ever commercially available embedded Microcontrollers built on 90nm-node with silicon nanocrystal memories that has intrinsic capability of exceeding 500K program/erase cycles. We also show that the cycling performance across temperature (-40C to 125C) is very well behaved even while maintaining high performance that meets or exceeds the requirements of consumer,...
Most of the techniques used to monitor and diagnose faults from machines are usually based on additional measurements which require high setup costs and installation difficulties. This paper focuses on developing a new sensorless method to monitor and diagnose different faults of a gearbox transmission system based on the parameters acquired from control systems. The control data, which are available...
Induction motors are the most widely used electrical machines in industry. To diagnose any possible incipient faults, many techniques have been developed. Motor current signature analysis (MCSA) is a common practice in industry to find motor faults. However, because small modulations due to faults it is difficult to quantify it in the measured signals which predominates with supply frequency, higher...
The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor is a very powerful tool for studying binding mechanisms between all kinds of biomolecular species without the need of any tagging or labeling. However, application of SPR at present is largely confined to the laboratory environment and SPR biosensors are yet to be widely accepted by the point-of-care diagnostics industry. Despite its attractive label-free...
A method that integrates nonlinear PID control and genetic algorithm is introduced for the drawback of traditional PID control. It combines the global convergence of genetic algorithm and self-adaptive capacity of nonlinear PID and enhances the accuracy and robustness of the control. In the genetic operations, a crossover program related to the individual fitness is designed based on random non-uniform...
