Preterm labor is the second leading cause of neonatal mortality and leads to a myriad of complications like delayed development and cerebral palsy. Currently, there is no way to accurately predict preterm labor, making its prevention and treatment virtually impossible. While there are some at-risk patients, over half of all preterm births do not fall into any high-risk category. This study seeks to...
Infrared neural stimulation (INS) is well characterized for the peripheral nervous system; however, translation to the central nervous system (CNS) presents a new set of challenges which require us to consider different anatomy, multiple cell types, and the physiology associated with structures in the CNS. This study presents our first attempt to translate INS to in vivo stimulation of the CNS and...
We present cooperative MIMO for alien noise cancellation (CoMAC): a per-tone, blind, low-complexity, linear, and adaptive noise whitening algorithm for alien crosstalk mitigation in upstream vectored VDSL systems. CoMAC directly acts on the residual errors of the vectored users after self-FEXT cancellation and frequency domain equalization, and thus, leverages the inherent alien-crosstalk-induced...
While determinants independent of bone mass have been identified for bone strength and toughness, little is known about genetic regulation of these factors, referred to collectively as bone quality. In the present work, using a mouse model, we investigated whether the deletion of the gene coding for matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) could affect the structural, compositional, and biomechanical properties...
Unlike the conventional "lock-and-key" sensor design in which one sensor is finely tuned to respond to one analyte, the sensor array approach employs multiple sensors in which one sensor responds to many analytes. Consequently, signal processing algorithms must be used to identify the analyte present from the array's response. The analyte identification process becomes significantly more...
We develop an analytical framework to evaluate the probability-of-miss and probability-of-false-alarm performance of an impulse noise (IN) detection algorithm for orthogonal frequency-domain multiplexing (OFDM) symbols based on monitoring the post-frequency-domain-equalizer (FEQ) instantaneous error at the output of the QAM constellation demapper over a range of tones (sub-carriers). Using the VDSL...
Simultaneously recorded electroencephalogram (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is rapidly emerging as a powerful neurophysiological research and clinical tool. However, the quality of the EEG, recorded in the MRI scanner, is affected by the ballistocardiogram (BCG), which is an artifact related to the cardiac cycle. The BCG has a complete spectral overlap with the EEG and is nonstationary...
The traditional method of stimulating neural activity has been based on electrical methods and remains the gold standard to date despite inherent limitations. We have developed a new paradigm - transient optical neural stimulation (TONS) to in vivo neural activation based on pulsed infrared light, which provides a contact-free, spatially selective, artifact-free method without incurring tissue damage...
It is estimated that approximately 17,000 malignant brain tumors are diagnosed in adults and 1,500 in children every year in the United States. Although primary brain tumors account for only 1.4% of all cancers, the 5-year survival rate of these patients (35%) is low. The most common initial therapy received by brain tumor patients is surgical resection. Many studies have shown that the degree of...
Of growing interest in the field of VDSL2 transmission is the evaluation of algorithms for improved performance using far-end crosstalk (FEXT) cancellation pre-coding. In order to perform fair evaluations of different algorithms, it is necessary to define a multiple input multiple output (MIMO) channel model that realistically represents the nature of the FEXT coupling dispersion that may be encountered...
Image compression and image encryption are pivotal to proper storage and transmission of images. Simultaneous image compression and encryption aims at achieving enhanced bandwidth utilization and security at the same time. The proposed number theory based image compression encryption (NTICE) algorithm employs number theoretic paradigm-Chinese remainder theorem, to solve congruencies and hence realize...
We use DAIS to obtain very low WER/BER estimates for linear block codes and SPA decoding on the Rayleigh frequency-flat slow-fading AWGN channel using BPSK modulation with interleaving. DAIS results for the (96, 50) LDPC code are compared with standard MC results where practical, demonstrating that DAIS obtains reliable WER/BER estimates to very low values in practical time frames.
