Microring weight banks enable novel analog processing approaches in silicon photonics. Incorporating statistical techniques, they can implement wideband dimensionality reduction. We demonstrate principal component analysis of three 1GHz signals in a microring weight bank.
Spurred by advances in scalable photonic system integration, ideas in photonic information processing have recently experienced a resurgence. We review the latest results in reconfigurable analog photonic networks, neuromorphic photonics, and multivariate RF photonics. These architectures could enable next-generation microwave signal processing and scientific computing.
Microring weight banks enable reconfiguration in analog photonic networks and multi-channel RF front-ends. We demonstrate 2-ring weight banks and show that they are tolerant to fabrication and thermal effects. Weights consisting of two microrings can potentially increase channel capacity by a factor of 2.72-fold.
Photonic weight banks employing multivariate statistical techniques could extend performance limits of multiantenna radio systems. We characterize the aggregate bandwidth penalty imposed by a silicon microring weight bank and assess application regimes for multivariate RF photonics.
This paper shows the application of a multi-criteria analysis method for prioritization of commercial and supply restoration services in an electricity distribution company. The methodology is based on the Macbeth algorithm and on a large amount of input parameters that are evaluated in order to set the relative importance of each service. This study is of great relevance and complexity because it...
Microring weight banks enable novel analog processing approaches in integrated photonics. Incorporating multivariate statistical techniques, microring weight banks can implement wideband, analog dimensionality reduction. We demonstrate principal component analysis of three 1GHz signals performed in a silicon microring weight bank.
This paper presents a smart service restoration method for electric power systems. Power system restoration (PSR) is the procedure of restoring the power supply after a power outage. Its objective is to restore the power system rapidly while satisfying all the operation constraints. Although it has been studied and applied most only to electrical distribution systems. The proposed methodology takes...
We demonstrate a continuous range of complementary (+/−) weights in a bank of silicon microrings. Continuously configurable weighted addition is a key function for multivariate analog signal processing and could enable scalable analog networking approaches in silicon photonics.
The distribution system is the final connection between the power system and consumers. If the load shedding is necessary to ensure that operating restrictions, usually this load shedding will occur in the distribution system. This paper analyzes the load shedding in medium voltage performed in the event of reduced availability of the supply system (generation and / or transmission) that may occur...
We demonstrate complementary (+/−) WDM weighted addition in a bank of silicon microrings using a balanced detection technique. Weighted addition that is tunable and complementary is a key function for multivariate analog signal processing and could enable scalable analog networking approaches with silicon photonic technologies.

This paper describes the VHDL modeling of Smart Meters communication based on DNP3 protocol point-to-point Network using IEEE 802.15.4 interface. The modeling was validated with the simulation of three scenarios which show that the measured latency is in line with the requirements of Smart Grid Applications. So, these results indicate that the approach is indeed promising.
Internet access by wireless networks has grownconsiderably in recent years. However, these networks are vulnerable to security problems, especially those related to denial of service attacks. Intrusion Detection Systems(IDS)are widely used to improve network security, but comparison among the several existing approaches is not a trivial task. This paperproposes building a datasetfor evaluating IDS...
Faced with an imminent restructuring of the electric power system, over the past few years many countries have invested in a new paradigm known as Smart Grid. This paradigm targets optimization and automation of electric power network, using advanced information and communication technologies. Among the main communication protocols for Smart Grids we have the DNP3 protocol, which provides secure data...
As Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET) becomes a critical infrastructure for road safety and traffic efficiency, its standardization and deployment face serious security challenges. The nature of VANET hinders ineffective most of existing defense schemes for wireless/mobile networks. This paper studies the impact of jamming on 802.11p, the standard of vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications. Jamming,...
Several countries have invested in technologies for Smart Grids. Among such protocols designed cover this area, highlights the DNP3 (Distributed Network Protocol version 3). Although the DNP3 be developed for operation over the serial interface, there is a trend in the literature to the use of other interfaces. The Zigbee wireless interface has become more popular in the industrial applications. In...
Commercial buildings use 40% of the total fossil fuel energy worldwide [1] and therefore present large potential energy savings opportunities to contribute to the future energy stability of the country. Incorporating energy efficiency when designing a new building could result in a 50–75% reduction in their energy consumption when compared to designs without energy efficiency in mind [2]. Existing...
Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET) enables wireless communications among vehicles. VANET applications benefit to the society with improved transportation safety and efficiency. However, security issues in delivering contents over infrastructureless wireless communication hinder VANET applications. Though security schemes have been proposed, the public remains skeptical due to the lack of common metrics...
When travelling in unfamiliar environments, a mobile service robot needs to acquire information about its surroundings in order to detect and avoid obstacles to arrive safely at its destination. This paper presents a map building solution to support mobile service robot's navigation, for service robots equipped with a LADAR (laser detection and ranging) or similar technology. The LADAR is positioned...
In the past decade, the current and envisaged GNSS systems have seen major developments, both in terms of interoperability and compatibility, as well as accuracy, performance, and availability. In particular, the emergence of Galileo and the evolution of other Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) have not only brought forth new opportunities and applications, but also new signal structures....
