This paper proposes a thyristor based short circuit current injector for providing short circuit current in isolated and weak grids, where sufficient fault current to trigger circuit breakers may not be available. This will allow the use of conventional miniature circuit breakers, which requires high fault current for instantaneous tripping. The method has been validated through experiments.
This paper shows an application of a Back to Back (BtB) converter interfacing a microgrid. The idea is to take advantage of the DC link part of the BtB converter to tap power to feed a remote area through DC cables. General aspects of DC transmission in power systems are properly scaled down to use at distribution levels. Thus voltage and frequency are fixed by power converters interfacing the microgrid...
This paper introduces the application of a Back-To-Back (BtB) Voltage Source Converter (VSC) to operate optimally a radial microgrid. Some pending technical issues in microgrids and how they could be solved or improved by using this proposal, as well as other general applications of this BtB converter in microgrids will be pointed out. One of the points highlighted and analyzed in this work is the...
This paper presents a complete analysis of a Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM), when it is intended to support a wind farm based on induction generators. Grid disturbances affect wind turbines with fixed speed generators directly connected to the grid, because they generate electromagnetic torque oscillations during and after faults. As a consequence, mechanical stress is presented in the gearbox...
In this paper, a VSI load equivalent is identified as seen from the inverter using recursive least-squares (RLS). By using a single FPGA, sampling points can be synchronized to the space vector modulated (SVM) switching pattern of the inverter, thereby avoiding switching glitch. This reduces the measurement noise significantly and improves the RLS estimate. Synchronized sampling also allows for direct...
In this paper, a state-space model of the power system is estimated as seen from the inverter using recursive least-squares (RLS). The inverter may function as a Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM), or connecting distributed energy sources to the grid. By using inverter synchronized sampling, measurement noise due to switching glitch are avoided. The method is well suited for online implementation...
