The bite detection is very important but difficult element of the social interaction analysis. Standard observation methods like human observer or a camcorder of visible light frequencies fail in this case. However, it is possible to discern cooler spots on the rodent's body that appear after body contact with another individual, and vanish after short time. These spots are assumed to be a saliva...
In various fiber-optic time and frequency distribution systems the delay of 1 PPS timetags is stabilized and precisely calibrated. However in a case of long fiber path the 1 PPS signal is seriously delayed in respect to UTC, which is cumbersome in various applications. In this work we present an idea and experimental evaluation of a circuit designed for compensating this delay. The compensation up...
Automotive seating structures have evolved over an extended period of development, resulting in convergence of practical embodiments to a planar kinematic chain, typically based on a four-bar linkage. Seating structures are subject to a stringent set of constraints and objectives, including: allowable envelope of motion, structural integrity, modularity and product cost. Although four-bar linkage...
Potassium-yttrium tungstate is analyzed as material for modulation of high power laser beams. It is found two promising AO modulator configurations: first of them provides the highest diffraction efficiency for linear polarized radiation, while the second one is capable to modulate random polarized radiation.
Delay and disruption-tolerant networks (DTNs) pose a number of problems that are uncommon in the commercial, fast Internet, namely, lack of end-to-end connectivity and long delays. Thus, standard tactical applications, such as WWW, e-mail or Blue Force Tracking (BFT), are unable to work in DTNs and must be somehow adapted. In the paper we propose how this adaptation may be achieved, discussing our...
Although the research on digital gaming has recently shown that collaboration, problem solving and critical thinking are in evidence with K-12 students who design games; researchers still need to make the case that digital game design content meets rigorous new Common Core standards for Language Arts and mathematics. No class time will be devoted to game design unless proponents of digital gaming...
Annually, an estimated 23,100 children and adolescents were injured on farms; 5,800 of these injuries were due to farm work. Teens aged 15–19 are at highest risk for agricultural injury and in Kentucky, the statistics reach 3x the national average. Closed head injuries from ATV incidents, tractor overturns, motor vehicle-farm machinery collisions and hearing loss top the list of causes. Building on...
We detail some lessons learned while designing and testing a decision-theoretic advising support tool for undergraduates at a large state university. Between 2009 and 2011 we conducted two surveys of over 500 students in multiple majors and colleges. These surveys asked students detailed questions about their preferences concerning course selection, advising, and career paths. We present data from...
This paper reflects on a novel concept of robotization in the health care sector. The idea is to design a robotic system capable of performing remote physical examination with palpation (i.e., pressing a patient's stomach to identify pain regions and stiffness of organs) and ultrasonography. The medical robotic system will consist of a remote haptic interface for the doctor and a robot located at...
Microwave assisted reactive sputtering was applied to obtain homogeneous and high optical quality ITO thin films with thickness of 50, 100, 200 and 280 nm. Electrical properties of deposited ITO thin films were measured using standard four-point probe method together with transmission spectra of ITO thin films in the wavelength range from 330 nm to 880 nm. The figure of merit calculated for all samples...
In this work thermoelectrical properties of TiO2:(Co, Pd) and TiO2:Nb thin films have been described. Thin films were performed by high energy magnetron sputtering method. Sputtering process was carried out from mosaic targets under low pressure of oxygen reactive gas. Electrical and thermoelectrical properties of as deposited and annealed at 800 K thin films were analyzed based on resistivity and...
Transparent conducting indium-tin oxide (ITO) thin films play a very important role in the field of optoelectronic devices such as photovoltaic cells and flat panel display devices. ITO films display low electrical resistance and high transmittance in the visible range of the optical spectrum. ITO thin films were deposited using a magnetron sputtering with a microwave source to improve the plasma...
Nowadays, much attention is paid to thin films surface wettability parameter. Hydrophobic coatings are well used for water repellant materials, while hydrophilic thin films are often used in anti-fogging applications. Titanium dioxide is one of the best materials for thin film coatings applications, due to its electrical, optical, chemical and physical properties such as photocatalysis, high transparency...
In this paper new magnetron sputtering system for multilayers deposition has been presented. The system allows sputtering of different materials from 4 targets in low pressure of working and reactive gas (oxygen, argon, oxygen + argon). Manufactured structures can be build from films, which have gradient concentration of dopant. Also the doping process can be performed with high precision in continuous...
In this work structural, electrical and antistatic properties of TiO2 thin films doped with different amount of V have been presented. It was shown that the doped thin films are semiconductors in room temperature. The amount of V dopant has a great influence on resistivity of prepared thin films similarly as annealing at 400degC. The time of static charge dissipation from the thin films surface dropped...
The simulated scattering characteristics are presented for a section of circular waveguide filled with a rod consisting of a number of alternating ferrite and dielectric discs which are magnetized through a four pole magnetic field. The advantage of this waveguide structure is reduction of size to a fraction of the diameters needed for ferrite filled waveguide section. The simulated performance indicates...
FDTD numerical study compared to the results of measurement is reported for double-ridged horn antenna with sinusoidal profile of the ridge. Different transitions from coaxial to double-ridged waveguide were considered on the preliminary step of the study. Next, a suitable configuration for feeding the ridges of antenna was chosen. The sinusoidal ridge taper is described in the next part of the paper...
The practical ferrite rotary field phase changer is designed and fabricated for low frequency by using a composite ferrite dielectric rod that allows to reduce diameter of a circular waveguide of phase shift section. Experimental results at 1.3 GHz agree well with ones predicted theoretically confirming the developed design procedure.
In this paper dielectric filling is presented as a simple way of adapting ridged horn antenna for ground penetrating radar (GPR). The requirements for GPR antenna were described to justify the choice of dielectric ridged horn as a simple handheld device aimed to landmines finding. An attempt of detection of the buried metal plate is also shown.
