In this paper, the theory of bag of view words model is introduced for image retrieval, and a method to enhance accuracy rate of the model is provided. In addition, an image retrieval system is also constructed for movie posters. The system matches the pictures uploaded with the corresponding movie from the gallery, and is more accurate and efficient.
Recently, an explicit control of weight sparsity level between the layers in the deep neural network has been proposed and gainfully been utilized to resting-state fMRI (rfMRI) data. However, the reliability of the weight sparsity control scheme via the percentage of non-zero weights (PNZ) was not systematically evaluated in term of the convergence property of the sparsity levels across various scenarios...
From content creators, to content distributors and consumer electronics industry, image quality is an important consideration both from an engineering and artistic point of view. In recent years, with the shift towards mobile multimedia, it is becoming increasingly important to be able to assess the quality of images displayed on mobile devices. In this paper we present an iOS app that makes it easy...
Since the born of intelligence tests, there have been a debate about the praticai use of intelligence tests, also with a lots of critics about the nature and the data we can derive from them. Perhaps the study of intelligence tests could be divided in different historical steps, in newer steps intelligence test were used and analyzed according to more detailed psychometrical bases and aiming to define...
As High Dynamic Range (HDR) video is emerging as the next revolution in digital entertainment, finding effective ways for measuring its visual quality is of paramount importance. In this paper, we utilize the saliency information derived from an HDR Visual Attention Model (VAM), called LBVS-HDR, for assessing the quality of HDR video content. To this end, this saliency information is incorporated...
It is important for multiple robots to engage tasks cooperatively and effectively. In a cooperative work, a robot needs to observe partner robots and anticipate their action. The authors have considered that visual scanpath acts as a key role to detect important regions for the action recognition of the partner because human generally attends to regions-of-interest for such recognition. The authors...
In this work, we present a depth-based solution to multi-level menus for selection and manipulation of virtual objects using freehand gestures. Navigation between and through menus is performed using three gesture states that utilize X, Y translations of the finger with boundary crossing. Although presented in a single context, this menu structure can be applied to a myriad of domains requiring several...
When traveling virtually through large scenes, long distances and different detail densities render fixed movement speeds impractical. However, to manually adjust the travel speed, users have to control an additional parameter, which may be uncomfortable and requires cognitive effort. Although automatic speed adjustment techniques exist, many of them can be problematic in indoor scenes. Therefore,...
This paper focuses on the study of combination of some of the existing clustering methods and utilizing them meaningfully for feature dimensionality reduction. The efficacy of different cluster validity indices is investigated in selecting good features. A fuzzy ART network is used for experimentation. Colon dataset, wine dataset and iris dataset are used in this study to see the effectiveness of...
When reading financial news, although there are critics explaining the fluctuation of Economic indexes in articles everyday, the news often assert bias on authors' favorite opinions. On the other hand, the amount of financial news published these days is staggering with diversified opinions on the same issues. Unless with acumen for the whole environment, audience will find hard to stay objective...
An image retargeting method is presented in this paper, which uses multiple operators to improve the performance. In the method, cropping is adopted first in order to remove non-important content to the desired aspect ratio while keeping significant content intact. If the desired aspect ratio cannot be met by cropping, an aspect ratio adjusting method is then adopted to fit the image to the desired...
Recently, high dynamic range (HDR) image which can accurately reflect the real scene prompts increasing interest. For visualizing the HDR images on standard display devices, it is needed to convert it to low dynamic range (LDR) images. This process is named as tone-mapping. Due to the reduction of the dynamic range, evaluating the tone-mapped image becomes important. Gradient magnitude measure has...
In this paper, we reveal that many conventional features used in computational image quality assessment (IQA) methods can hardly characterize perceived distortions on various image characteristics and distortion types, thus resulting in relatively low prediction performance of visual quality scores. To solve this problem, we propose a new IQA method, called Structural Contrast-Quality Index (SC-QI)...
In this paper, we propose an adaptive spatio-temporal quality pooling scheme for video quality assessment (VQA) considering the uniformity of distortion distribution and visual attention. A uniformity index is defined according to the distribution of localized distortions in one frame, and is utilized to generate a saliency map from the visual attention model, to incorporate temporal memory effect,...
We present a scalable system for sketch-based image retrieval (SBIR), extending the state of the art Gradient Field HoG (GF-HoG) retrieval framework through two technical contributions. First, we extend GF-HoG to enable colorshape retrieval and comprehensively evaluate several earlyand late-fusion approaches for integrating the modality of color, considering both the accuracy and speed of sketch retrieval...
This work presents a feature detection method built around a dynamic time-warping (DTW) -based confusion matrix. It can be used to discern potential features with minimal data manipulation and minimal prior knowledge. This technique provides a robust distance measurement between sample electroencephalogram (EEG) signals that form the basis of a confusion matrix indexed against events carried out as...
In this paper, the relationship between visual attention and eye blinking is described. In our experiment, we observed blinking when a subject performed a task. We determined that the subject's visual attention functions during the task by electrodermal activity. Experimental results showed that blink rate decreased when the subject's visual attention was engaged. On the other hand, blink rate increased...
Detection of frequency for steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEP) is addressed. We propose to use the combination of CCA and training data-based template matching between two level of data adaptive reference signals that can deal with the dominant frequency. On the basis of magnitude of stimulus frequency components, the dominant channels are selected. The recognition accuracy as well as the...
The Structural SIMimarity (SSIM) is one of the most prominent image quality assessment (IQA) methods due to its high prediction performance and wide applicability for image quality optimization problems. To reflect the luminance adaptation (LA) characteristic of human visual system (HVS), SSIM is modelled to have high consistency with Weber's law. However, it inevitably has some intrinsic faults that...
Recently, the low cost EEG acquisition systems such as the Emotiv Epoc give new tools to develop Brain-Computer interface systems for everyday use outside the laboratory. However, the low sampling rate and the low number of channels remain possible sources of failure. The Canonical Correlation Analysis and the Multivariate Synchronization Index (MSI) methods are applied in a SSVEP-based BCI in order...
