In this paper a comparison between grid-feeding and grid-supporting inverters is shown based on simulation and measurement of inverter output impedances. The output impedance of a grid-feeding inverter with current control shows capacitive behavior compared to inductive behavior of a grid-supporting inverter with voltage control.
A topology of series active power filter (SAPF) based on a single phase half-bridge cascaded multilevel inverter is proposed to compensate voltage harmonics of the load connected to the point of common coupling (PCC). The main parts of the inverter are presented in detail. Any voltage reference can be easily obtained by a simple control with the proposed inverter. Therefore, the inverter acts as a...
A model predictive control (MPC) is proposed for a buck-type active power filter (APF) integrated single-phase quasi-Z-source inverter (qZSI) to directly eliminate the dc-side low-frequency ripple power. The buck-type APF operates independently from the main circuit power devices, comparing to the coupled-type APF. The proposed MPC compensates the low-frequency ripple power directly by the APF capacitor...
Unified power quality conditioner (UPQC) is a custom power device which is used intended for mitigation of voltage and current associated power quality problems in power distribution system. The considered topology to take a reduced dc-link voltage which enables the UPQC deprived of conceding its compensation capability. Active power filter mainly classified based on converter used i.e. constructed...
Grid connected operation of Distributed generation (DG) is yet another approach to provide reliable and secured power. The operational issues of grid connected DG is the focus of research at present to achieve adequacy and security. The islanding is the situation where DG continues to operate with the utility disconnected. It is customary to detect islanding when it occurs to ensure continued stable...
This paper proposes a photovoltaic (PV) array based cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter (CHBMLI) working active power filter as a shunt for four wire distribution system. This system is used for the power acclimatizing of distribution network as it is composed of linear, nonlinear and unbalanced loads. Solar Photovoltaic formed isolated source for CHBMLI. This active filter minimize line harmonics,...
Ideally, distribution utilities are responsible to provide good power at a fixed rated frequency to the consumer end at unity power factor. Due to the bulk usage of non-linear power electronic loads, distribution system network (DSN) suffers large current distortion. Further, the intermittent hybrid natural green sources (HNGS) like PV and PMSG wind grid connected using hysteresis current controller...
This paper proposes a simple 3-step fundamental active current extraction scheme for a 1-phase 5-level cascaded H-bridge inverter (FL-CHBI) based distributed static compensator (D-STATCOM). Firstly, the proposed algorithm employs band pass filter (BPF) and low pass filter (LPF) for the determination of the peak magnitude of fundamental component of load current, Im1. Secondly, BPF and LPF are utilized...
Unbalanced grid voltage dips may lead to unbalanced non-sinusoidal current injections, dc-link voltage oscillations, and active and/or reactive power oscillations with twice the grid fundamental frequency in three-phase grid-connected Photovoltaic (PV) systems. Double grid frequency oscillations at the dc-link of the conventional two-stage PV inverters can further deteriorate the dc-link capacitor,...
The abundant use of power electronics-based equipment/systems have produced an important impact on the power quality of electric power supply distribution system. The non-linear type domestic and industrial loads injects harmonics in the system voltages. Besides, many of the equipment causing the harmonic distortions are sensitive to the deviations from the ideal sinusoidal line voltage. That is why,...
This paper is focused on the improvement of the grid current at the point of common coupling of a three-phase grid connected photovoltaic system supplying a non-linear load. This improvement is achieved by using the PV inverter as a shunt active power filter in addition to its main function of power injection in the grid. The shunt active power filtering is performed to compensate the disturbing grid...
This paper describes a Sliding mode control (SMC) technique for a single - phase grid connected voltage source inverter (VSI) through LCL filter for distributed generation applications. SMC technique is applied as a control method with a fixed band hysteresis controller. Mathematical modeling of the VSI circuit is done through state space analysis. This control method provides robust current voltage...
This paper presents the performance analysis of a single phase UPQC (unified power quality conditioner) device with a left shunt APF (active power filter) configuration, termed as left shunt UPQC. This device is applied for a special load configuration. One set of load is voltage sensitive with considerable reactive power demand. The other set consist of load which is quite unaffected by voltage disturbances...
In this paper, a model based predictive current control (MPCC) with a modified synchronous detection technique (SDT) is developed for a 3L-NPC multi-functional inverter based solar photovoltaic (SPV) system. This 3L-NPC multi-functional grid tied inverter (MFGTI) perform maximum power point tracking, harmonic compensation, load balancing and power factor control. The proposed SDT consists of two-stages,...
Supply utilities and consumers are now a days more concerned about the adverse effects of grid connected solar photovoltaics. We must reduce harmonic emission injection to the grid. In this paper solar power system model is designed by using MATLAB/Simulink with five level cascaded H-Bridge shunt active harmonic filter using P&O based MPPT algorithm. We have successfully reduced total current...
Traditional 2-level voltage source inverter (VSI) based active power filters (APF) has a high DC voltage across the capacitor. A pure APF connected to a 3-ϕ 400V line voltage, will have a DC voltage of more than 600V for its effective working. Active switches in the inverter subjected to this voltage, results in a high voltage stress. Multi-level inverter topology in APF reduces the voltage stress...
This paper depicts a multifunctional control strategy applied in three-phase inverters, which are connected to the distribution network. The proposed strategy is able to inject active power into the electrical grid and compensate current disturbances simultaneously. The main goal of this flexible strategy is to improve the Power Quality at the point of common coupling allowing full or partial compensation...
By the way of establishment of mathematical model for three-phase four-wire T-type three-level Active Power Filter (APF), the relation of DC-link voltage difference, the neutral current and the duty-ratio of each bridge arms are revealed. Consequently, a control strategy of DC-link voltage balancing is proposed with the controllable neutral current injection, which is easier to be realized and more...

The PV energy system is connected to Saudi Arabia National Grid (110/13.8/0.4 KV) via inverter circuit, transmission line and step-up transformer. The harmonics due to the inverter circuit and non-linear local load are mitigated and reduced using shunt...
