We introduce novel ultra-sensitive tunable optical nanosensors based on conceptually new physical phenomena and techniques. The core foundation of these sensors is based on molecular-like behavior of hybrid systems consisting of metallic nanoparticles and semiconductor quantum dots when they interact with a laser field (activating field). Therefore, instead of using plasmons or excitons as in conventional...
Quantum dots (QDs) nanoparticles are increasingly being used for biomedical applications. Most QDs consist of heavy metal which may be potentially toxic to biological organisms. In this study, CdTe/ZnS core/shell QDs were evaluated for their harmful effects on Escherichia coli, which served as model for potential impact to microorganisms and microbial cell toxicity. Organic soluble CdTe and CdTe/ZnS...
We describe a simple and versatile method to prepare water-soluble nanostructures by encapsulating hydrophobic nanocrystals with diblock copolymer micelles. Various hydrophobic nanocrystals, including metal, magnetic and semiconductor nanoparticles are encapsulated within amphiphilic polystyrene-block-poly(acrylic acid) block polymer. The resulting water soluble nanoparticles have well defined core-shell...
CdTe/Cd1-xMnxS core-shell structure nanoparticles were successfully synthesized in aqueous solution assisted by microwave irradiation. The photoluminescence spectra showed that incorporating low level Mn2+ in outer inorganic shell will not quench the photoemission of quantum dots. The doped nanocrystals exhibited high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), reaching 52% in water under optimum condition.
We observed second harmonic generation from semiconducting CdTe/CdS nanocrystals with a diameter below 15 nm. Their submicron size, high nonlinearity and orientation sensitive SHG response are adapted for ultrafast, high resolution probing of optical near-fields.
We proposed and demonstrated warm white light generating combinations of semiconductor nanocrystal quantum dot emitters with high photometric quality including high color rendering index (~80) on LED platforms to meet requirements of future lighting. Additionally, we developed and demonstrated of these nanocrystal luminophors with metal nanoparticles to control and enhance their spontaneous emission...
Nano-hydrogel is one of the most promising drug carrier for its sensitivity to environmental stimulus. For in vivo optical imaging of nano-hydrogel, the development of novel contrast agents with near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence is especially important. Poly-N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylic acid (PNIPA-co-AA) nano-hydrogel was synthesized by precipitation polymerization method. The regulation on the...
Physically flexible, solution-processed solar cells have the potential to harvest light conveniently, cheaply and efficiently. Absorption of the considerable power in the infrared region of the solar spectrum is necessary for efficient solution-processed solar cells. We use lead sulphide (PbS) colloidal nanoparticles (quantum dots) that are quantum size effect tunable, allowing tailoring of absorption...
When conjugated to CdSe/ZnS nanocrystals (quantum dots), the nucleobase adenine and the neurotransmitter dopamine quench fluorescence emission from in a manner strongly dependent upon the size of the quantum dot. The degree of quenching serves to predict the efficiency with which the conjugates are able to enter living cells. Along with quenching, the presence of specific receptors on the cells is...
