The goal of the MobileASL (American Sign Language) research project is to enable sign language communication over the U.S. cellular network, which is low bandwidth and lossy. Data loss can greatly impact the quality of compressed video because of temporal and spatial error propagation. We investigate techniques to minimize the effect of data loss for improving compressed video sign language conversations...
One of the major challenges for video collaboration lies in video conferencing in low bandwidth and low cost. In this paper we discuss about a server less desktop based video conferencing application that has been built around a highly bandwidth efficient H.264 video compression technology. The proposed solution offers a low cost multiparty video conferencing solution suitable for corporate environment...
This paper focuses on the rate-distortion optimization of low-delay 3D video communications based on the latest H.264/MVC video coding standard. The first part of the work proposes a new low-complexity model for distortion estimation suitable for low-delay stereoscopic video communication scenarios such as 3D videoconferencing. The distortion introduced by the loss of a given frame is investigated...
An H.264/AVC HP video decoder is implemented in 90nm CMOS. Its maximum throughput reaches 4096×2160@60fps, which is at least 4.3× higher than the state-of-the-art. By using partial MB reordering and lossless frame recompression, 51% of DRAM bandwidth is reduced which results in 58% DRAM power saving. Meanwhile, various efficient parallelization techniques contribute to a core energy saving of 54%.
Due to the decoding dependency of MPEG coded frames, lots of dependent frames are transmitted at video cassette recording (VCR) operations, thus more computation resource, hard disk and network bandwidth are consumed on streaming media server, and higher decoding complexity on Set-Top Box (STB). To tackle this problem, our scheme of supporting VCR functionalities with adaptive rate adjustment in streaming...
MPEG-based compression schemes and multicast- based nature of IPTV deployments result in channel change delay. Solutions to reduce this delay have been proposed in the literature and also in the commercial deployments. In this paper, we present an analysis of channel change delay in multicast-based IPTV systems. As video encoding parameters, more specifically the frequency of the intra-coded (I-)...
In this paper, we develop an approach toward joint source-channel coding (JSCC) for JPEG compressed image transmission. First, a data partition (DP) technique is employed to divide the JPEG bitstream into three groups, namely, Huffman codes, DC coefficients and AC coefficients. Second, we combine the rate-compatible punctured convolutional (RCPC) codes to protect the coded data according to channel...
This paper presents an HDTV video decoder core that is is able to decode MPEG-2, MPEG-4 AVC and VC-1 formats and is fully compatible with the Blu-ray Disc standard. A novel re-configurable architecture is adopted to achieve reduced hardware, and a data compression method suitable for all video decoding standards is applied to reduce memory data usage and access bandwidth. The circuit volume of the...
