Development of an innovative membrane material for the biggest Bedouin tent in the world. In contemporary architecture, textile membranes offer a variety of applications. Typically, architecture membranes consist of regular fabric, covered with a protective layer on both sides to protect the base fabric from environmental influences. Most of the time the membrane loses its textile appearance and its feel. But especially this visual and textile property, combined with a traditional color scheme, was one key aesthetic design parameter for the 71,000 m2 lower membrane in a stadium project for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar 2022. In order to do justice to the design concept, an innovative architectural membrane has been developed, which consists of individual PVC‐coated polyester threads, interwoven in different colors. By using a Jacquard loom, different patterns can be created with the fabric. Thereby the mechanical material properties of the membrane not only vary in warp and weft direction but also within one direction with the corresponding woven pattern.
