Volgens een bekend gezegde is het gelaat de spiegel van de ziel. Hierin ligt besloten dat gelaatsexpressies niet alleen uitdrukking geven aan de interne toestand van een persoon, zoals emoties of intenties, maar ook dat interactiepartners uit gelaatsexpressie kunnen afleiden wat er in iemand omgaat. Er zijn twee contrasterende visies op de functie van gelaatsexpressies c.q. glimlachen. Volgens de theorie van Ekman (Ekman, 1972; Ekman & Rosenberg, 1997) geven gelaatsexpressies uitdrukking aan de emoties die iemand ervaart, en maken interactiepartners uit de gelaatsexpressies op welke emoties ervaren worden. Volgens het evolutionaire perspectief van Fridlund (1994, 2002) fungeren gelaatsexpressies als signaal aan soortgenoten over de intenties en motieven van een persoon in een bepaalde context.
