Die Angiographie (Gefäßdarstellung) dient dem Nachweis funktioneller morphologischer Gefäßveränderungen. Durch die modernen Schnittbildverfahren wie CT-Angiographie und MR-Angiographie haben die Indikationen für die Durchführung angiographischer Untersuchungen abgenommen. Die Arteriographie wird nahezu ausschließlich in digitaler Subtraktionsangiographie- Technik (DSA) durchgeführt. In der Regel werden zur Kontrastmittel- Applikation intraarteriell eingeführte Katheter verwendet. Nur in Ausnahmefällen erfolgt eine direkte Punktion der Arterie mit Injektion des Kontrastmittels über die Nadel (»Nadel-Angiographie«). Die digitale Subtraktionsangiographie mit intravenöser Kontrastmittel-Applikation (i. v. DSA) wird nur noch ausnahmsweise durchgeführt.
