Resumen
El muestreo dirigido por participantes (o respondent driven sampling, RDS) es ampliamente utilizado para investigar comportamientos de riesgo para el VIH entre las trabajadoras sexuales, los usuarios de drogas, y otras poblaciones difíciles de accesar, pero ha tenido una aplicación limitada en las poblaciones inmigrantes de los EE.UU. En el 2010, utilizamos el RDS para reclutar a mujeres inmigrantes de Centro América viviendo en Houston, Texas sin documentos e investigar sus comportamientos de riesgo para el VIH. A partir de tres participantes iniciales, reclutamos a 226 mujeres en un período de 16 semanas. Las redes sociales fueron densas y las participantes adoptaron el sistema de reclutamineto con razonable facilidad. Los puntajes de homofília indicaron una preferencia moderada entre las participantes de reclutar a mujeres del mismo país de origen. Sin embargo, el reclutamiento entre grupos fue suficiente para lograr una muestra diversa que alcanzó el equilibrio en cuanto a las características demográficas y de comportamientos sexuales. En general, el RDS fue fácil de implementar, alcanzó una muestra grande en un período de tiempo relativamente corto, y accesó a una población que de otra manera sería difícil de accesar. Nuestros resultados sugieren que el RDS es un método eficaz para el reclutamiento de mujeres Latinas indocumentadas para las investigaciones de comportamientos de riesgo para el VIH.
