A 3D stereoscopic high definition game technique developed for Smart television sets is presented. Despite its limited processing power and low memory, the technique takes advantage of embedded television set streaming feature and user-controlled 2D objects. In order to test the technique, we developed a game for a commercial television. As a result, a new technique and an immersive challenging 3D...
Using and holding a smartphone has become natural and ensures user acceptance as well as intuitive handling. We focus on using accelerators in a smartphone to interact with a Digital TV. To use the orientation and movement of smartphones for use interaction, the coordinate alignment between a smartphone and the screen of a Digital TV is required. In this paper, we proposed the method that allows aligning...
In this paper, we present an automatic piano tutoring system that uses a consumer-level depth camera to recognize keys that are touched by a performer in real-time. Accordingly, the system provides feedback to the performer as to whether the appropriate keys for playing a music score at the proper tempo are being touched. Our system can be installed on any piano system with a simple calibration process...
In this paper, we propose an interactive desk lamptype projection system which provides a creative workspace for editing both digital and physical contents. To narrow the sense of difference between digital and physical contents, we implement a multi-touch interface for convenient digitalization of physical contents and modification of digital contents. Furthermore, we provide visual feedback directly...
The High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) will be the next generation video standard, which adopts several new techniques to achieve better coding efficiency compared to the current H.264. One significant progress is the way of coding architecture partitioning. HEVC employs a recursive quadtree to get the best partitioning, which means each 64×64 pixel area is analyzed in different size Coding Units...
High efficiency video coding (HEVC) appears due to the demand on high compression video coding beyond H.264/AVC in ultra-high definition (UHD) videos, and it brings high computational complexity with a variety of state of the art coding tools. As for intra prediction, HEVC has 35 prediction modes while H.264/AVC has 9 intra modes. To exploit the spatial correlation, we adopt an edge detection method,...
In this paper, we propose a fast inter mode decision method for High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) in order to reduce its encoding complexity by simplifying the inter prediction unit (PU) mode decision process. Experimental results show that encoding time is reduced by 46.5% at the consequence of only 1.1% coding efficiency loss when the proposed method is jointly used with the early CU termination...
A novel SSIM based RDO approach for intra-only coding in HEVC is presented. We incorporate SSIM into the distortion measure for variable size CTUs. The corresponding Lagrange multiplier is also derived. The experimental results show that the proposed RDO approach achieves 8.54% bit-rate reduction on average.
The excessive journaling degrades the performance and shortens the lifetime of NAND flash storage in mobile devices. We propose a novel journaling scheme that resolves this problem by using small-sized NVRAM efficiently. Experimental results show that our proposed scheme outperforms EXT4 by up to 16.8 times for synthetic workloads. Also, for TPC-C SQLite benchmark, it enhances the transaction throughput...
Recently, malware has been dramatically increasing on smartphones. Particularly, spyware is a great concern regarding privacy. In this paper, we propose a new virtual keyboard called RIK, to prevent spyware from stealing users' sensitive information, such as a password, entered on a user interface.
User's password entry is susceptible to shoulder-surfing attacks. We propose a novel PIN entry method called SwitchPIN to effectively deal with this challenging problem by rendering a random mapping between switchable keypads.
Memory deduplication, which can remedy memory scarcity in mobile systems, can hardly be used due to its high computation cost. This paper proposes a computation efficient memory deduplication scheme that avoids unnecessary computations for memory deduplication. Our prototype shows significant computation cost reduction while providing the same memory savings as in previous approaches.
The low-density parity check decoder in the digital video broadcasting-second generation terrestrial (DVB-T2) receiver usually uses the sum-product algorithm for better bit error performance. However, the algorithm requires estimating noise variance, which is computationally expensive. In this paper, influences of inaccurate estimation of variance are investigated. Based on the simulation results,...
One of the main imperfections in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) technique is a peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) or crest factor (CF). High crest factor signal forces a power amplifier in communication systems to back-off which leads to power efficiency degradation. Several techniques have been proposed in literature to mitigate the high peaks in OFDM signal; however most of them...
The local availability of TV White Spaces is studied considering the impact of adjacent channel interference. A case study is presented, which demonstrates the impact of interference from White Space Devices operating in frequency bands adjacent to a terrestrial TV service. In addition, conventional static broadcasting is compared to a Dynamic Broadcast scenario, where additional TV White Spaces are...
In Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) mobile communication systems time-varying channels cause an inter-carrier interference (ICI) and degrade the performance due to the frequency orthogonality loss. Doppler shift compensation or equalization is very complex and often prohibitive in consumer receiver equipment. We propose a Doppler effect compensation / equalization technique for these...
Multi exposure image fusion is a well-known approach adopted to create High Dynamic Range (HDR) images and emulate the Human Visual System (HVS) using Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) cameras. The main limitation of current multi-exposure image fusion techniques is their inability to compensate for moving objects in a scene and camera shake. Previous attempts to solve camera shake have been able to accurately...
