We review recent advances in the development of slab-coupled optical waveguide (SCOW) devices, progress toward a flexible photonic integration platform containing both conventional high-confinement and SCOW ultra-low confinement devices, and applications of this technology.
A silicon microring modulator with independent resonance and coupling tunability is monolithically integrated with a stacked CMOS driver. At 25Gbps, the OMA is −1.9dBm, the extinction ratio is 3.5dB, and the excess loss is 2.6dB.
Molybdenum disulfide nano-sheets were all-optically deposited on a single mode fiber facet, and its process was monitored by a reflectometry method. Nonlinear response and power dependent transmission of prepared sample was observed by a 1552nm fiber laser.
Recently we demonstrated a novel type of hybrid silicon laser based on resonant grating cavity mirrors. The first optically-pumped proof-of-principle device measures 2µm by 55µm, requires milliWatt-level threshold power and has a side-mode suppression ratio of 39 dB. In this work we discuss the challenges and propose a scheme for porting the concept to an electrically pumped device. The novel implementation...
We demonstrate a compact, thermally reconfigurable reflection canceller on SOI for adaptive on-chip optical isolation without reliance on magneto-optic or nonlinear properties. An isolation ratio of 34dB is achieved with an insertion loss of <0.15dB.
The paper introduces optical nano-hair structures made from high-κ dielectrics that can be used to impart an arbitrary phase function to the transmitted beam. The concept behind the design of these new structures is elaborated.
We present an electrically tunable optical device with ultra-broadband tunability operating in 2–10 µm spectrum. We also, for the first time, optically observe resistive switching behavior in reflection measurements under electrical bias.
