On behalf of the IEEE Photonics Society Board of Governors and Staff, I would like to welcome you to Bellevue for the IEEE Photonics Conference 2013. As you may know, this represents the 26th year in this series of conferences formerly known as the LEOS Annual Meeting. We hope you will appreciate the many high quality technical sessions and special symposia presented in this year's program, as well...
A review will be given on the latest development of 1.55 µm quantum dot lasers. Static and dynamic properties of short cavity ridge waveguide lasers will be presented exhibiting data rates up to 22 GBit/s. The impact of structural and operational parameters will be discussed and compared with a simulation model. High-resolution linewidth measurements of distributed feedback lasers indicate with <...
High temperature operation of a quantum dot laser integrated with a silicon waveguide on a SOI wafer was demonstrated for the first time. Up to 100°C temperature, output power sufficiently high to achieve an optical error free link was obtained.
We demonstrate successful 3-mode-division-multiplexed × 192-Gb/s dual-polarization 8QAM (total 576 Gb/s) transmission over 480 km of few-mode fiber (FMF). This distance was obtained using an all few-mode re-circulating loop containing a 60 km FMF span.
We demonstrate error-free wavelength conversion of 16-QAM 28-GBaud (112 Gb/s) signals and 1-to-6 wavelength multicasting of 16-QAM 22-GBaud (6×88 Gb/s) signals based on four wave mixing in a dispersion engineered silicon nanowire.
The modulation-bandwidth enhancement of VCSELs with a passive optical-feedback-cavity is demonstrated, which enables us to tailor the modulation-transfer function. The 3dB-bandwidth is increased by a factor of 2, reaching far beyond the relaxation-oscillation frequency.
We demonstrate a scheme that can arbitrarily manipulate the orbital-angular-momentum (OAM) and the polarization of each data channel in an OAM- and polarization-multiplexed communication system. A manipulation-induced power penalty of < 1dB is observed when 100 Gbit/s Quadrature-phase-shift-keying data is carried on each channel.
Enabled by a dual-angle and dual-color illumination based computational on-chip imaging platform , here we reported the discovery of an entirely new swimming pattern, in the form of chiral ribbons, observed in human and horse sperms. We believe that this imaging platform could help us better understand the statistical behavior of various micro-swimmers and sperms of different species, shedding...
Low-cost access to advanced photonic integration technology is becoming available through multi-project wafer runs, using standardized building blocks. We present the design methods and the current status for InP-based photonic ICs.
Cellular contrast was demonstrated for the first time in lensfree on-chip holography by employing antibody-conjugated gold and silver nanoparticles (NPs) as contrast agents. Cytometric differentiation of CD4+ and CD8+ lymphocytes was achieved, after NP labeling, using machine learning algorithms.
An optical particle detection and analysis system is presented. This platform combines the capillary microfluidics, integrated optics and novel image acquisition and analysis algorithms to form the basis of a portable or handheld cytometer instrument. Experimental results provided shows the testing results are closely matched with conventional flow cytometer data.
A novel platform for decoupling the surface and bulk effects in plasmonic-based biosensors is proposed. Theoretical results show that the proposed platforms allows for three-mode spectroscopy rather than a single mode as in conventional plasmonic biosensors.
An almost instantaneous Monte Carlo calculation of optical coherence tomography signal from tissue was implemented using importance sampling and massively parallel computing. Original computation time was reduced from more than 6 days to 9 seconds.
We review the progress made to date on amorphous oxide semiconductor TFT technology. In addition, we discuss some remaining issues for manufacturing with the focus on the role of hydrogen impurity in amorphous oxide semiconductors.
We report progress on the development of a new technique that has the potential to enable the vacuum deposition of OLEDs with feature sizes ≤ 20um, and hence high resolution OLED displays. An OLED device with 16um by 130um sub-pixel size has been successfully demonstrated utilizing the novel idea of the in-situ shadow mask patterning method showing the capability of this method to achieve high resolution...
Organic, polymer, and oxide-based transistors are among the alternatives to silicon being considered for flexible display pixel circuitry. Carrier mobilities in the semiconductors now exceed those of amorphous silicon, and switching voltages can be below 2 V. In this presentation, we focus on gate dielectrics compatible with these semiconductors. First, we consider polymer dielectrics in which static...
