This article presents the background and active research programmes of Macquarie University's Centre for Lasers and Applications (CLA). The major fields of research supported by CLA include lasers and optical physics, laser engineering, and laser applications. More details on the specific topics of research in some of the project areas are provided. These specific research topics include biological...
Numerical aperture increasing lens (NAIL) microscopy in reflected light imaging of Si integrated circuits is applied to laser signal injection microscopy. The improved lateral spatial resolution and signal to noise ratio provided by NAIL microscopy will greatly enhance the capability of laser signal injection microscopy
In this work, a report on the direct formation of a photonic crystal (PC) structure on a glass substrate using the nanoimprint lithography (NIL) technique and the characteristics of the organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) formed on this substrate is presented
A new way for light emission at 1530 nm is explored using mixtures of Er2O3, P2O5, Yb2 O3 nanoparticles and spin-on glass deposited on silicon wafers. This layer is very thin, but exhibits optical gain
An encapsulated photonic crystal is proposed and developed, where an encapsulating cap is formed on top of the air columns. Cross-sectional view of air column triangular lattice PC slab-waveguide (PCS) structures is shown in without and with encapsulated caps, respectively. Simulation results towards high efficiency photonic crystal surface emitting layers (PCSELs) by means of spontaneous emission...
The fabrication is described and data are presented on a laser diode that incorporates a buried photonic etched void pattern within its cavity. Side by side comparison with laser diodes fabricated without the pattern are used to demonstrate its influence on the laser characteristics
Lasing characteristics of photonic crystal nanolaser consisting of lattice point shifts were investigated. The experiment and FDTD calculation suggested that the lasing mode of the device had the ultimate small modal volume close to (lambda/2n)3
In this paper, the vertical radiation phenomenon from a narrow core tapered hollow waveguide is presented. This would be useful for realizing compact multiplexer/demultiplexers coupled with vertical cavity devices
We have developed a variable optical attenuator AWG multiplexer (V-AWG) integrated on a single planar light-wave circuit (PLC) chip. We successfully employed a stacked structure using micro-mirrors formed on the PLC to integrate monitor photodiodes (PDs) and achieved a low transmission loss of 5.5 dB and a high PD responsivity of better than 0.9 A/W
The paper reports on the generation of spatial solitons with carbon disulfide (CS2) as the nonlinear material, which has a critical power of 190 kW for the laser wavelength of 800 nm. A 150-femtosecond pulse with a maximum energy of 1 mJ is also used. Each pulse from the laser is split into pump and probe pulses. The pump pulse is focused into a line (using a cylindrical lens) at the entrance face...
Free-space optical communication imposes unique challenges for optical networks including size/weight/power limitations, long propagation latency, and pointing- or atmospheric-induced fades. In this talk, we will discuss free-space networks and >100-Gb/s line-rate time-domain packet-routers enabled by ultrafast all-optical logic gates and switches
Half-bit delayed dark return-to-zero (HBDDRZ) payload with differential-phase-shift-keying (DPSK) orthogonal labeling is demonstrated. High extinction-ratio of both modulations improves receiver margin. The HBDDRZ causes negligible effect on the RZ-like demodulated DPSK label
This paper presents the architecture evolution trends for metropolitan optical networks during the last few years together with the emergence of new technologies and products
Propagation in a random medium is often described by a random walk and a diffusion coefficient. However in the mesoscopic regime, where wave properties cannot be neglected, interferences alter the diffusion process leading in extreme situations to strong (Anderson) localisation. The recent observation of coherent backscattering of light by laser cooled atoms has opened the way to new studies in previously...
Developments and some key problems in (Al,Ga,In)N-based UV and VIS photodetectors are briefly reviewed. Photodetectors' response to high energy photons are described. Some applications of these photodetectors in biophotonics and combustion control are presented. It is concluded that the detectors' performance are strongly linked to materials and processing progresses in such semiconductor alloys
We show that soliton collisions can reduce quantum phase noise. This effect can improve quantum nondemolition measurements, simply by changing the parameter regime in which the measurement is performed. Successful implementation favors short propagation distances, small wavelength separation between solitons, and larger probe than signal solitons
We present the results of several experiments in which nonlinear-optical processes are enhanced by introducing gases into the hollow core of a photonic bandgap fiber. Such fibers offer the potential of greatly enhancing nonlinear interactions
I report on new type of all-fiber gas-phase devices using gas-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fibre. These include an efficient quasi-CW pumped hydrogen Raman converter, a self-contained laser frequency stabilisation unit based on acetylene-filled hollow-core PCF and electromagnetically-induced transparency acetylene cell
