Spectroscopic study of Mn 4+ ions in SrLaAlO 4 has been performed in the 5–500K temperature range. The photoluminescence of Mn 4+ ions around 714nm originates from the 2 E→ 4 A 2 transition. The energy distance between the 2 E and 4 T 2 levels is about 2500cm −1 . The Mn 4+ emission in SrLaAlO 4 undergoes rapid thermal quenching already above 250K that can be caused by intrinsic point defects of the host having energy levels overlapping with the 4 T 2 level of Mn 4+ ions.
