In the present work, 5-methyl-2-isopropyl-1,3-dioxolan-4-one and 5-bromo-5-methyl-2-isopropyl-1,3-dioxolan-4-one were synthesized successfully under solvent free reaction while 5-methylene-2-isopropyl-1,3-dioxolan-4-one monomer was synthesized by using a variety of solvents and their yield percentages were determined in each case. The synthesized organic compounds were characterized by FT-IR, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR. The polymers were characterized by FT-IR, 1H-NMR, FE-SEM, EDX, XRD, DSC, DTG, and TGA. The effect of temperature on morphological change was studied by hot stage microscopy. The molecular weights of the resulting polymers were determined by static light scattering (SLS). The extent of ring opening and the hydrolysis of the polymers were estimated by FT-IR, 1H-NMR. It was observed that both polymers had a porous morphology and hence had high water absorption capacity and can be used as a good viscosifier.
