Zoologischer Anzeiger - A Journal of Comparative Zoology is devoted to comparative zoology with a special emphasis on morphology, systematics, biogeography and evolutionary biology targeting all metazoans, both modern and extinct. We also consider taxonomic submissions addressing a broader systematic and/or evolutionary context. The overall aim of the journal is to contribute to our understanding of the organismic world from an evolutionary perspective.
Zoologischer Anzeiger invites suggestions for special issues. Interested parties may contact one of the editors.

The mite family Harpirhynchidae (Acariformes: Cheyletoidea) comprises 154 named species from 15 genera, all of which are permanent parasites of birds or snakes. We inferred the phylogeny of the family with maximum parsimony (MP) and Bayesian analyses for 67 ingroup and 3 outgroup species from the families Cheyletidae, Demodecidae, and Psorergatidae based on 177 morphological characters. The analyses...

Molecular sexing is routinely used in the fields of forensic investigations, population genetics and conservation biology. However, none of the assays used so far allows non-ambiguous, quick, and cheap sex identification in snakes. Here, we designed a new multiplex PCR (two panels of triplex) sexing assay using two homologous loci on sex chromosomes (snake gametologous genes), CTNNB1Z/CTNNB1W and...
In amniotes (mammals, reptiles and birds) we can find two major sex-determining modes: environmental sex determination (ESD), largely in the form of temperature-dependent sex determination, and genotypic sex determination (GSD). It is evident that in reptiles there were multiple transitions between these two modes, but their directions are often difficult to reconstruct. However, it seems that GSD...
