Polish orthocoking coal (87,8 wt % C) was studied by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. Three different groups of paramagnetic centers with broad Gauss, broad Lorentz 1, and narrow Lorentz 3 EPR lines were found in the studied coal. The influence of oxidation of coal with nitric acid, peroxyacetic acid PAA and in O2/Na2CO3 system on these groups of paramagnetic centers was compared.
The influence of aging and weathering process on charcoals contained in relic architectural sgraffitos was investigated. Two EPR phenomena in aged charcoal were revealed - increase of diamagnetism and appearance of dispersion. The phenomena prove that long time resolution (order of hundreds of years) process of graphitisation is going on. This dependence could become base for dating of sgraffitos.
