The article reviews the evolution of university-industry-government collaboration in the Japanese science and technology system. A special attention is given to the analysis of the current state of relations among its key actors and reconfiguration of the university functions according to the Triple Helix model. The case of Tohoku University as one of the leading national universities of Japan is studied in depth.
