Mucin 1 (MUC1) peptide fused with Q11 (MUC1‐Q11) having 35 residues has previously been shown to form amyloid fibrils. Using time‐dependent and high‐resolution atomic force microscopy (AFM) imaging, it is revealed that the formation of individual MUC1‐Q11 fibrils entails nucleation and extension at both ends. This process can be altered by local mechanical perturbations using AFM probes. This work...
Mixing of different materials is routinely used to create alloys or composites with new functionalities and properties tailored for specific applications. We have synthesized a uniform stoichiometric composite of CdO and SnTe, two compound semiconductors with distinctly different electrical properties and electronic band structure. The carrier concentration in the composite varies from about 1020...
Despite much effort, the detailed atomic structure of most surfaces is still not known. This paper reviews the recent developments in using X-ray diffraction for studying surfaces. Experiments on InSb (111)2×2 are discussed as an example of how to solve surface structures by Fourier methods, without any a priori model.
