We report on low-loss, low-crosstalk, and compact arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs) based on a 200-nm-thick-Si3 N4-core platform. We present design, fabrication and characterization of a compact photonic integrated circuit consisting of tri-layer Si3N4 platform including path-length-matching waveguides, multi-layer vertical couplers, arrayed waveguide gratings as demultiplexers, multimode interferometers and heater based phase tuner for long-baseline interferometric imaging.

We investigate the scalability of all-to-all crossbar switch with microring resonators. State-of-the-art −18.1 dB crosstalk in resonators cannot support a 4×4 switch fabric while below −40 dB crosstalk is necessary for 32 × 32 switch fabrics.

This paper demonstrates bit-parallel, all-to-all communication with AWGR for on-board optical interconnects. A flexible bandwidth allocation is also presented. Trade-off studies optimize the bit-parallelism and achieve up to 3.5× higher energy efficiency compared to the single-bit case.
