Experiments with terahertz surface plasmons (SPs) excited by a free electron laser demonstrated that SPs are totally reflected from a plain mirror slightly inclined to the normal of the guiding surface. With larger angles, the SP reflection decreases gradually, which indicates that the wave vector of SPs on a real metal surface is not constant but is spread over a rather wide interval due to SP scattering...
The Novosibirsk free electron laser is the first multi-turn energy-recovery linear accelerator with three separate laser systems (the terahertz, far-infrared and mid-infrared ones). The facility is well equipped with optical elements and instrumentation available to Russian and foreign users. In this paper, we describe in brief the workstations of the facility and survey selected recent experiments...
Radiative losses of terahertz surface plasmons (SPs) on plane metal-dielectric interfaces have been studied. Experiments performed with “gold — zinc sulfate — air” plane structures at a 130 μm wavelength have shown that a thin-film dielectric coating of the metal of about λ/500 thickness could double the SP propagation length. In addition, an optimal dielectric layer thickness corresponding to the...
Experiments on study of surface waves launched with a monochromatic terahertz source are described. We compare characteristics of the surface waves at the gold samples of different curvature covered with thin dielectric layers. Transmission of SEWs across surface impedance boundaries and air gaps is also examined.
Propagation of terahertz surface plasmon polaritons along plane metal-dielectric interfaces and their jumps across air gaps have been studied using monochromatic radiation of Novosibirsk free electron laser.
Terahertz surface plasmons (SPs) produced by monochromatic radiation of Novosibirsk free electron laser and travelling along straight and curved metal-dielectric interfaces have been studied experimentally. Characteristics of SPs and radiation decoupled into free space were examined with three complementary terahertz sensors (a Goley cell, a 320×240 uncooled microbolometer matrix, and a cryogenic...
A comprehensive review of our experiments on generation of terahertz (THz) surface plasmons (SPs) performed at Novosibirsk free-electron laser lately is presented in the talk. Golay detector and an uncooled microbolometer focal plane array were applied for sensing and visualization of THz SPs in real time.
