Electric fields at metal-dielectric contact were calculated analytically and numerically. The obtained field exhibited enhancements strong enough to cause breakdown at a triple junction and more apparently at a quadruple junction. Such field enhancements may lead to a noble type of cold cathode.
This paper presents cooling effect of field emission from PbTe thermoelectric semiconductor cathode. The cooling effect of field emission comes from the energy difference between the outgoing field electron and the incoming replacement electron.
We have investigated the enhanced field emission at the contact between metal and dielectric. Such a strong enhancement of field emission has been often observed as a breakdown and is considered to be due to dielectric [1]. It seems that the enhancement of emission has two reasons [2]. One is the polarization of dielectric due to the charge on the metal. The polarization charges, in return, attract...
We have investigated the cooling effect of field emission from PbTe to reduce the thermal conduction in the cathode. It is found that the energy exchange per electron is large enough to cool a small device. It is also found that the net cooling power is more efficient than that obtained for field emission from typical semiconductors.
We report the results of preliminary experiments on the laser irradiation of a metallic whisker antenna. Open circuit voltage measurements, with and without an applied DC bias, are reported. Voltages greater than 10mV have been measured.
We have investigated the enhanced field emission observed at the contact between metal and dielectric. To describe the dielectric effect on the enhancement, we consider a two-dimensional quadruple junction consisted of metal, vacuum, dielectric, and vacuum. It is found that both field and field emission are more enhanced in the quadruple junction than in the triple junction. The enhanced field can...
A cylindrical dielectric-metal structure is used to analyze the field enhancement due to an extension of the dielectric layer in a triple junction. Results show that this type of field enhancement is caused by the polarization of the dielectric and that it may take place along the detour path from metal through dielectric to vacuum instead of from metal to vacuum. The amount of space charge produced...
