We successfully demonstrate a flat-structured DCN powered by large-port-count fibre-switch-based OCS, PLZT-switch enabled TDM and MEFs supported SDM. The inter-DCN ToR-to-ToR direct optical connections are setup through metro/core networks using all-optical SDM/WDM converters.
We present a 3-moded cladding-pumped multi-element fiber amplifier comprising 4 Er/Yb doped signal fibers and 1 multimode pump-delivery fiber with spatial multiplicity of 12. An average signal gain of 18dB and differential modal gain of 2–5dB are achieved.

A cladding-pumped multi-element fiber comprising 4-Er/Yb-doped signal fibers and single multimode pump fiber has been used to demonstrate a C+L split-band amplifier. The signal fibers were cascaded to provide >20dB gain over 80nm bandwidth.
We report the first experimental demonstration of a cladding pumped FM-EDFA supporting 4 mode groups. The modal gains are measured to be >20dB between 1540nm–1570nm with a modal differential gain of ∼4dB among the mode groups.
We demonstrated an Erbium-doped multi-element-fiber amplifier extending the bandwidth at shorter wavelengths in C-band. Each fiber-element provides a maximum gain of 36dB and NF <4dB. The fiberelements were cascaded to obtain >20dB gain in 1520–1570nm.
We report the first amplified transmission experiments based on multi-element transmission fibres and amplifiers.
