Plasmonic aerogel containing 50nm gold nanoparticles is made using a modified 2-step method that maintains control over the gel time while preventing nanoparticle aggregation. Strong narrow surface plasmon resonances verify that the nanoparticles are well dispersed within the silica matrix, and enable applications in sensing, SERS, nonlinear optics or plasmonic gain. Discrepancies between measured...

Objectives: Coronary heart disease (CHD) and chronic periodontitis (CP) both are multifactorial chronic diseases and related to inflammation. Interleukin‐6 (IL‐6) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of inflammatory diseases. The purpose of the study was to investigate the association among IL‐6 gene polymorphisms, CP and CHD susceptibility in a Chinese population...
We use controlled hole collapse in photonic crystal fibres to reduce the splice loss between dissimilar fibres. We also describe a hollow-core PCF as a support for a waveguide core made from silica aerogel.
Low-loss splices have been formed between small-core photonic crystal fibres and fibres with much larger mode field diameters. The PCF's core is enlarged using controlled hole collapse before splicing with a conventional electric-arc fusion splicer.
