A hybrid III-V/SOI directly modulated DFB laser operating at 1.5 μο is fabricated, showing a side mode suppression ratio above 50 dB and a 3-dB bandwidth of 12 GHz. Error-free transmission (BER<10−9) at 10 Gb/s over 66-km SSMF is demonstrated without dispersion compensation and FEC.
This letter reports on an Echelle grating demultiplexer for dense wavelength-division-multiplexing applications with 16 channels and 100 GHz channel spacing. The Echelle grating is designed and fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator platform with a silicon guiding layer of 300 nm. The measured insertion losses of the Echelle grating are lower than 2 dB for all channels and the crosstalk is below 15...
We present our recent work on high speed silicon optical modulators developed within the UK silicon photonics and HELIOS projects. Examples of their integration with other photonic and electronic elements are also presented.
A heterogeneously integrated III–V-on-silicon optical amplifier utilizing an ultra-thin DVS-BCB die-to-wafer bonding process is reported. A novel design exploiting high confinement in the active waveguide is demonstrated showing low power consumption operation. 13dB on-chip gain is achieved for 40mA drive current at room temperature.
In this paper, we analyse and demonstrate the use of photonic functions to fulfill the requirements of 60 GHz broadband radio communication systems for access and home area networks. In the access domain, high capacity mmW radio systems are used as point to point links for mobile backhaul or as bridges between fixed transport networks. We demonstrate first the provision of 10 GbE compatible point...
In this paper, we perform a frequency up-conversion from 4.5 GHz to 60 GHz of an OFDM signal compliant to the IEEE802.15.3c pre-standard (3.03 Gbps) by directly modulating a Fabry-Perot mode-locked laser whose self-pulsating frequency is 54.8 GHz. Improved performance compared to the external modulation scheme previously reported is achieved and comparison with the use of a standard electronic up-converter...
