The purpose of this paper is to design an optimal CHP islanded microgrid, through technology selection and unit sizing software, to be used for further research on real-time energy management. Two software packages, HOMER® and WebOpt®, originally developed at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and Lawrence Berkley Laboratory (LBL), respectively, are utilized. Using these programs, different...
A photoconductive dipole antenna is analyzed using the Discontinuous-Galerkin Finite-Element Time-Domain method. An approximate model for the antenna is discussed. The excitation is approximated as the induced photocurrent in the dipole gap, and the photocurrent is derived from the minority carrier diffusion equations. Various simulation convergence results are discussed for the emission intensity...
A time-harmonic quasi-magnetostatic volume integral equation is formulated for the eddy currents and magnetization in a conducting, magnetic material. The integral equation is solved using the Locally Corrected Nyström (LCN) method. The formulation is capable of handling mixed meshes of hexahedral, prism, and tetrahedral elements. Several problems are analyzed and error convergence plots are presented.
Cutoff frequencies of a ridged waveguide are calculated by eigenvalue analysis using the spectral domain Green's function. The results coincide well with HFSS results. The cutoff frequency of the dominant mode will be used for the admittance between the input mode and a slot. The Spectrum of Two-Dimensional Solutions (S2DS) method is seen to have good computational efficiency for complicated internal...
In this paper, we report a Vt tuning technique by dipole-engineering dopant incorporation in the FinFET metal gate stack. Remote interfacial layer scavenging induced by the metal gate dopants has an added advantage of improving the CET, without impacting short channel behavior. Using Al as the dipole-inducing dopant in a FinFET gate stack, a 170mV of positive Vt shift with 0.8Å CETinv reduction was...
We report operation of AlGaN laser diodes grown on semipolar buffer layers partially relaxed by misfit dislocation formation at heterointerfaces remote from the active region. This approach offers a pathway to mid-UV AlGaN based lasers.
We present the effects of partial strain relaxation on the optical properties in lattice mismatched semipolar (1122) InGaN using polarization-dependent photoluminescence measurements to probe the strain dependent band mixing of the valence bands.
A packaged up-converter has been developed for the ETSI 42 GHz point-to-point radio band. The MMIC contains an LO-doubler-buffer amplifier, an image-reject balanced mixer and an RF variable gain amplifier. The up-converter has 10 dB conversion gain, 15 dB image rejection, 15 dB of gain control, 15 dBm IIP3 and 50 dB LO-to-RF isolation in the mixer. The up-converter consumes less than 1 watt DC represents...

Mobile learning has always been a hot topic in recent years, and there are a lot of new instructional applications which are developed on hand-held devices. With the maturing development of functions on mobile phone, Clicker, which is used as an interacting tool between teachers and students on tradtional classroom response system can be replaced by mobile phone, PDA, tablet PC. This research aims...
The use of nonpolar or semipolar AlGaN for UV-C diode lasers avoids the compromises in gain, injection efficiency, and ohmic losses imposed on c-plane lasers by the unusual valence band structure of AlGaN alloys.
GaAs based heterojunction bipolar transistors are used in microwave oscillators to provide low phase noise operation. Prediction of phase noise requires transistor models to be accurate at low frequencies as well. Measurements of low frequency noise and network parameters however, are not straight forward because of the instabilities of the transistor in the measurement setup. We designed and built...
Customers of Cloud Services are expected to choose specific machine images to instantiate in order to host their workloads. Unfortunately very little information is provided to the users to enable them to make intelligent choices. We believe that as the number of images proliferates it will become increasingly difficult for users to decide effectively. Cloud service providers often allow their customers...
Strong scaling of scientific applications on parallel architectures is increasingly limited by communication latency. This paper describes the techniques used to mitigate latency in Anton, a massively parallel special-purpose machine that accelerates molecular dynamics (MD) simulations by orders of magnitude compared with the previous state of the art. Achieving this speedup required a combination...
A GaAs low-noise amplifier (LNA) is designed with first-time success using a technique for HEMT modelling which divides the device into intrinsic gate fingers embedded in an analysable metal structure. The gate finger is characterised by de-embedding metallisation from a standard test structure. The device is then re-built, with any geometry or layout that the foundry allows, and modelled by electromagnetic...
The authors look at learning potentials of Social Network Sites (SNSs) and attempt to harness the wisdom of crowds. To promote interchanges of useful information among individuals and groups, this paper presents a model of a novel application, Like-minded People Recommendation (LmPR). LmPR recommends like-minded people to users in SNSs automatically based on text mining and collaborative filtering...
A 4 × 4 mm QFN overmoulded packaged up-converter has been developed for the 38 GHz point-to-point radio band. The MMIC contains LO-doubler-buffer amplifier, image-reject balanced mixer and RF amplifier with linear gain control and consumes 1.5 watts DC. The up-converter has 7 dB conversion gain, 15 dB image rejection, 15 dB of gain control, 20 dBm IIP3 and 50 dB LO-to-RF isolation in the mixer. Performance...
In intense, pulsed active detection, a single, intense pulse of radiation is used to induce photofission in fissionable material, increasing its detectability. The Mercury pulsed-power generator was converted to positive polarity (+3.7 MV, 325 kA, 50-ns FWHM) to drive an intense, pulsed radiation source based on the FIGARO active detection concept. The probing radiation source consisted of an ion-beam...
The steady drumbeat of Cloud as a disruptive influence for Infrastructure Service Providers (ISP's) and the enablement vehicle for Software As A Service (SAAS)providers can be heard loud and clear in the industry today. In fact, Cloud is probably at the peak of the hype curve, and already there are identified challenges associated with effective deployment for business critical applications (so called...
Small diameter, high current density electron beams are needed for the small beam tunnels required for high frequency traveling wave tube (TWT) amplifiers. The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) began research on small diameter (<;100μm) single fiber DC cathodes for this application. Two types of fibers were tested. Fibers made from graphite were compared to fibers made solely from single walled...
