Solid state lasers are complex systems that sometimes display unstable aperiodic output. This behavior may be due to a deterministic low dimensional chaos. In this paper we show the results of a MATLAB based algorithm that implements nonlinear dynamics theory directly from a raw osciloscope trace and determines if the system is chaotic or not and characterizes its underlying attractor.
