We experimentally examine a modulation-induced phase drift in depletion-mode silicon phase modulator and Mach-Zehnder modulator. The impact on BPSK signal is studied under varying modulator operating conditions.
Mach-Zehnder modulators introduce nonlinearities for large driving signals that induce bit error rate (BER) penalties. In silicon photonics a nonlinear phase response leads to a more complex nonlinear response. We propose a digital pre-distorter based on a nonlinear memory polynomial model to reduce BER penalty.
High speed silicon optical modulators must be compatible with CMOS drivers to reach their full potential for low cost and low power consumption. We designed a CMOS driver for a Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) that has been segmented to lower required voltage swings on a per segment basis and to increase the speed. Previous inductor-less drivers produced on the same process, IBM 130 nm CMOS, ran at 10...
The orbital-angular-momentum states in fibers have similar polarization-mode dispersion property than single mode fibers. A fixed-analyzer technique is demonstrated to characterize this phenomenon in an OAM fiber that supports up to the second order OAM mode.
This paper presents a novel fully integrated full-duplex data transceiver to support bidirectional high-data rate neural interfaces (electrical stimulation and neural recording). The transmitter (TX) and the receiver (RX) are designed to share a single implantable antenna. The TX generates IR-UWB based on edge combining, and the RX uses a novel ISM-2.4-GHz narrow-band OOK receiver. Separation between...
We investigate experimentally and via simulation, the monitoring of fiber link quality in a PON using optical coding technology. We discuss design issues for periodic coding and the optimal detection criteria. We develop a reduced-complexity maximum-likelihood sequence estimation (RC-MLSE) algorithm. We conduct experiments to validate our detection algorithm using four periodic encoders that we designed...
We simulate both the throughput and the delay of an experimental 7times622 Mbps spectral amplitude coding (SAC)-OCDMA system. Our results reveal that the round robin receiver/transmitter (R3T) protocol performs better than S-ALOHA CDMA protocol and provides a 4.5 dB improvement
We consider different strategies for improving the capacity of SAC-OCDMA: incoherent sources, multi-laser sources and forward error correction (FEC) or coherent sources. Coherent sources must have precise frequency placement to avoid beating and outperform the FEC solution
