We fabricate a silicon microring-based photonic circuit comprising a passive NRZ-to-PRZ signal-format converter and a serial-cascaded modulator for clock-recovery applications. We demonstrate on the same chip 5-Gbit/s format conversion and 5-GHz sampling with 64-ps-width pulses.
We demonstrate dual-microring resonator-coupled cross-connect switch element integrated with a lateral p-i-n diode on a silicon-on-insulator substrate. We realize 10-Gbit/s data routing/switching in silicon waveguide crossings by using carrier-dispersion effect with ~0.7/0.85 ns switch-on/off times.
We propose many-element cascaded-resonator devices with gapless inter-cavity coupling using spiral and double-notch microdisk resonators. We demonstrate such devices with up to 101 elements in a silicon nitride-on-silica substrate.
This invited paper reviews our recent progress in silicon microresonator-based passive devices for potential on-chip optical interconnect applications. Specifically, we report our proposals and initial demonstrations of (i) many-element cascaded microdisk resonators as optical delay lines, and (ii) cascaded microring switch matrix. We also report our study on surface-state absorption-induced thermo-optical...
We propose many-element cascaded-resonator devices with gapless non-evanescent inter-cavity and waveguide-to-cavity coupling using double-notch-shaped microdisk resonators. We demonstrate such devices with up to 50 elements in a silicon nitride-on-silica substrate.
We propose two-dimensional nonblocking low-power photonic switch nodes for networks-on-chip using multimode-interference-based waveguide crossing-coupled microring electro-optic switch array in silicon-on-insulator.
We report double-notch-shaped microdisk resonators for silicon nonlinear-optic applications with direct in/out coupling via the microdisk notches. We measure optical bistability and resonance wavelength redshifts induced by the notch-coupled pump light.
We report experimental demonstration and modeling of all-optical on-chip non-return-to-zero (NRZ) to pseudo-return-to-zero (PRZ) format conversion using narrow-band silicon microring resonator-based notch filters. Our proof-of-principle experiment using a carrier-injection-based tunable silicon microring resonator demonstrates NRZ-to-PRZ conversion at 3.6 Gbit/s. Our Fourier-transform-based modeling...
We analyze silicon coupled-microring resonators-based electro-optic switching using injection-type p-i-n diodes. Numerical simulations and modeling suggest electronic-logic lightwave switching by applying two electrical data streams. We observe non-reciprocity between states (0, 1) and (1, 0).
We demonstrate NRZ-to-PRZ format conversion by using silicon second-order coupled-microring resonator-based notch filters. Our experiments show that 3.6-Gbps NRZ signals are converted to PRZ pulses with 40-ps width and 8-dB extinction ratio.
We demonstrate microring resonator-coupled multimode-interference-based crossings in 2times2 cross-grid array filters in silicon-on-insulator. Our experiments reveal a Q of ~14000 and an extinction ratio of ~15 dB in the drop-port spectrum via cascaded microring-coupled crossings.
We demonstrate coupled spiral-shaped microdisk resonators with asymmetric non-evanescent coupling between the two microdisks in silicon nitride. Initial experiments reveal reciprocal throughput-port transmissions with high-Q. Simulations show input-direction-dependent drop-port transmissions and asymmetric mode-field distributions.
We report our latest experimental results in spectrally characterizing silicon-based spiral microdisk resonators as 3-port channel filters, with one waveguide non-evanescently coupled to the spiral notch. We also show initial measurements of the resonance modes out-of-plane scattering that are probed using a lensed singlemode fiber scanning at a micrometer-distance above the microdisk.
We report a numerical study on retrieving the dispersion diagrams of waveguide-coupled planar photonic-crystal-embedded microresonators (PCEMs) that comprise a finite-size square photonic crystal lattice of air-holes embedded in a high-index-contrast square microcavity. We extract the projected dispersion diagram of the waveguide-coupled PCEM by means of spatial Fourier transform of the simulated...
We report initial numerical simulations of lateral waveguide-coupled spiral micropillar resonator-based channel drop filters. The spiral shape comprises two joint half-circles of slightly different radii with a notch on one side. Our two-dimensional finite-difference time-domain calculations suggest that such spiral microresonator filters are unidirectional - only the preferred sense of lightwave...
We report our numerical calculations and initial experiments on waveguide-coupled square micropillar resonator-based devices. Our calculations using two-dimensional finite-difference time-domain simulations and Fourier analysis show that waveguide coupling to a micropillar with a long flat coupling sidewall enables desirable directional wavevectors in the micropillar, and thus potentially gives rise...
We report our initial experimental demonstration of electrically tunable Fano resonance line shapes by using racetrack ring microresonator-coupled Mach-Zehnder interferometers with embedded p-i-n diodes on silicon-on-insulator substrates. Fano resonance observed at the interferometer output ports is due to interference between the guided lightwave that is coupled to the microresonator and the coherent...
We propose silicon waveguide-coupled octagonal microresonators with directional coupling to single modes. Numerical simulations suggest that the k-vectors in waveguide-coupled large-sized octagonal microstructures are directional. Experiments demonstrate two modes from a waveguide-coupled 50-mum-size octagonal microresonator.
We report silicon electro-optic modulators based on p-i-n diodes integrated microdisk and microring resonators. Our experiments demonstrate a 380-MHz 20-micron-size microdisk modulator and a 1-GHz 50-micron-size microring modulator, using plusmn1 V driving voltages.
We report surface plasmons enhanced coupling to whispering-gallery modes in micropillar resonators. We observe a 4-fold coupling enhancement using a glass prism coated with a 20-nm gold film and coupled to a silica micropillar resonator.
