The capability and effect of quantum dots on the detection of DNA concentration were investigated in this paper. The results showed that coating and conjugation procedure would not affect the electrical and optical properties of quantum dots. However, the optical property of quantum dots was altered under high and varied temperatures.
Acute myocardial ischemia affects both cardiac muscle force development and shortening in the affected regions. The exact mechanisms are unclear. We investigated myocardial function during ischemia and reperfusion both experimentally and with a muscle fiber model. The model was subjected to perturbations in contractility and force activation. Results show that the cardiac muscle model reflects many...
A noninvasive, psychophysiologic measurement paradigm was used to examine the effects of autonomic activity on electrocardiographic T-wave amplitude and heart rate. Sympathetic nervous system activity was manipulated by having subjects perform a difficult mental arithmetic task. Parasympathetic influences were inferred by measuring respiratory sinus arrhythmia. Preliminary results suggest that both...
Increased afterload is normally associated with vasoconstriction. The heart has to increase its work to overcome this load, which can be reduced with vasodilators. The forward and reflected waves are computed for the vasoconstriction-induced hypertension and subsequent vasodilation conditions. Results show that the increased and decreased work output by the left ventricle is principally modulated...
An instrument for constant current iontophoretic transdermal drug delivery was designed, prototyped, and preliminarily tested in the New Zealand white rabbit. This flexible device has been designed to synthesize several constant current output waveshapes of selectable magnitude, frequency, and duty cycle. The output waveforms include the conventional DC and monophasic pulsed DC, as well as two novel...
