Comet 103P/Hartley 2 was observed on November 1–6, 2010, coinciding with the fly-by of the space probe EPOXI. The goal was to connect the large scale phenomena observed from the ground, with those at small scale observed from the spacecraft. The comet showed strong activity correlated with the rotation of its nucleus, also observed by the spacecraft. We report here the characterization of the solid...
Asteroid (175706) 1996 FG3 is a binary asteroid and the baseline target for the proposed MarcoPolo‐R sample return mission. We present thermal‐infrared photometry obtained with the European Southern Observatory (ESO) Very Large Telescope using the VISIR instrument, together with optical photometry obtained with the ESO New Technology Telescope using the EFOSC2 instrument. An absolute visual magnitude...
The evolution of the spin rate of Comet 9P/Tempel 1 through two perihelion passages (in 2000 and 2005) is determined from 1922 Earth-based observations taken over a period of 13year as part of a World-Wide observing campaign and from 2888 observations taken over a period of 50 days from the Deep Impact spacecraft. We determine the following sidereal spin rates (periods): 209.023±0.025°/dy (41.335±0...
We present optical observations of 24 Centaurs performed between 1998 and 2002 with the University of Hawaii 2.2-m telescope. This is the largest such Centaur survey to date. We report colors for all objects, and show that they cover a continuum with mean V–R color of 0.58±0.01 and standard deviation 0.15. The color distribution fits between those of the Kuiper Belt and the cometary nuclei, and seems...
