Dwarf-planet (1) Ceres is one of the two targets, along with (4) Vesta, that will be studied by the NASA Dawn spacecraft via imaging, visible and near-infrared spectroscopy, and gamma-ray and neutron spectroscopy. While Ceres’ visible and near-infrared disk-integrated spectra have been well characterized, little has been done about quantifying spectral variations over the surface. Any spectral variation...
UVES and HIRES high-resolution spectra of Comet 9P/Tempel 1 are used to investigate the impact and rotational light curves of various species with a view toward building a simple model of the distribution and activity of the sources. The emission by OH, NH, CN, C 3 , CH, C 2 , NH 2 , and OI, are analyzed, as well as the light scattered by the dust. It is found that a simple...

A hypervirial perturbation method is shown to give accurate energy levels for a previously proposed Schrodinger equation for the relative motion of two ions in a Penning trap. The numerical results obtained by some previous authors are found to be in error and the new perturbation results are checked by an independent finite difference method.
