Preparing toward the new-generation communication by improving the capacity in the channel can be achieved by employing a MIMO system with polarization diversity means. This paper presents a low-profile $4 \times 4$ MIMO bidirectional antenna consisting of two composite antennas mounted on a ground plane. The composite antenna is constructed by stacking a notch antenna and a loop antenna on top...
This paper discusses the channel capacity of mobile terminal MIMO antenna focusing on correlation coefficient, radiation efficiency, body effect and propagation model. To find the dominant factor enhancing channel capacity, resistance loaded two-dipole array is examined in terms of correlation and efficiency. A smart phone model with two small folded inverted F-shaped antennas is also used to examine...
A composite antenna of a notch antenna and a loop antenna has been developed for indoor MIMO base station. The composite antenna has dual polarized radiation patterns pointing to two different directions. The horizontally polarized wave is given by the notch element in x-axis direction while the vertically polarized wave is given by the loop element in y-axis direction. The combination of the two...
This paper presents an analysis of MIMO antennas consisting of notch antenna and loop antenna for a wide area mobile communication system with bi-directional radiation patterns. The notch antenna radiates a horizontally polarized wave while the loop antenna radiates a vertically polarized wave. The MIMO antenna is designed for 4G applications with the resonance frequency at 3.5 GHz. The antenna produces...
This paper presents the evaluation of channel capacity for 4 × 4 MIMO system in indoor propagation environment at frequency 3.5 GHz and 2.6 GHz. The effect of an antenna with the beam radiation pattern on the capacity of the channel is shown by comparing the capacity with the dipole antenna as conventional antenna. The channel response in the simulation is modeled using ray tracing method and the...
Characteristics modes analysis of a combined small antenna consisting of a disk loaded monopole antenna and a notch array with parasitic elements are presented in this paper. This antenna is used for a low-profile orthogonal dual polarization antenna for small indoor Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) base station system at the 2 GHz band of IMT-2000. Two different antennas are layered on the ground...
A wideband dual-polarized small antenna is proposed using a crossed tapered slot antenna. Antenna height is minimized by optimizing the antenna parameters and is lightweight not to use dielectric materials. Antenna geometry for easy fabrication is also provided by combining two TSAs with a slit and a large hole on each substrate. A MIMO emulator by this dual-polarized antenna is also demonstrated.
Two design parameters, SNR and correlation, are key factors for enhancing channel capacity in MIMO systems. For the handset antenna design, radiation efficiency is also an important evaluation factor. This paper presents simple formulas of design parameters of mobile terminals and an optimum antenna design for handset antennas based on a realistic propagation model to estimate the channel capacity.
A pair of small and low-profile orthogonal dual-polarization combined antenna has been proposed for miniature indoor Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) base station to restrain spatial correlation in Line-Of-Sight (LOS) channel environment. A disk loaded monopole antenna is used for vertical polarization component and a notch array antenna with parasitic elements for horizontal polarization component...
MIMO system is a technique known as obtaining the high channel capacity. However, the channel capacity is reduced due to the presence of a direct path. Previous studies have shown that high SNR leads to significant capacity enhancement with high correlation environment [1]. Low correlation can be achieved by use of the orthogonality of the received signals in the LOS environment [2,3,4]. This paper...
In multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems, antenna selection is an effective method to lead to improvements of the communication performances without increasing number of antenna elements. In this paper, we reveal the antenna selection criterion suitable for indoor LOS scenarios for two-stream MIMO systems. The indoor line-of-sight (LOS) scenarios are constructed by using ray-tracing propagation...
In a handset MIMO (Multiple Input and Multiple Output) antenna, small number of elements and ports are desired. To achieve large channel capacity in above situations, adjustment of radiation patterns is important. We focus on analog techniques, and apply phase difference feeding to a handset MIMO antenna including human body effects. The phase difference is decided and fixed based on MEG (Mean Effective...
In MIMO transmission, efficient communication is provided by beneficial use of radiation pattern and polarization. In this paper, we use a dual-polarized directional MIMO antenna as an indoor base station, and examine about the transmitting antenna selection from four elements to two elements based on measurement data. We show that minimum BER is obtained by the selection maximizing minimum eigenvalue...
