We report radar and optical photometric observations of near-Earth asteroid (214869) 2007 PA8 obtained during October 2–November 13, 2012. We observed 2007 PA8 on sixteen days with Goldstone (8560MHz, 3.5cm) and on five days with the 0.6m telescope at Table Mountain Observatory. Closest approach was on November 5 at a distance of 0.043au. Images obtained with Goldstone's new chirp system achieved...
We investigated the spectral and compositional properties of Chelyabinsk meteorite to identify its possible parent body in the main asteroid belt. Our analysis shows that the meteorite contains two spectrally distinct but compositionally indistinguishable components of LL5 chondrite and shock blackened/impact melt material. Our X-ray diffraction analysis confirms that the two lithologies of the Chelyabinsk...
Olivine-dominated asteroids are a rare type of objects formed either in nebular processes or through magmatic differentiation. The analysis of meteorite samples suggest that at least 100 parent bodies in the main belt experienced partial or complete melting and differentiation before being disrupted. However, only a few olivine-dominated asteroids, representative of the mantle of disrupted differentiated...
In the past, constraining the surface composition of near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) has been difficult due to the lack of high quality near-IR spectral data (0.7–2.5μm) that contain mineralogically diagnostic absorption bands. Here we present visible (∼0.43–0.95μm) and near-infrared (∼0.7–2.5μm) spectra of nine NEAs and five Mars-crossing asteroids (MCs). The studied NEAs are: 4055 Magellan, 19764 (2000...
Surface composition of near-Earth Asteroid (4179) Toutatis is consistent with an undifferentiated L-chondrite composition. This is inconsistent with early observations that suggested high pyroxene iron content and a differentiated body.
Phase reddening is an effect that produces an increase of the spectral slope and variations in the strength of the absorption bands as the phase angle increases. In order to understand its effect on spectroscopic observations of asteroids, we have analyzed the visible and near-infrared spectra (0.45–2.5μm) of 12 near-Earth asteroids observed at different phase angles. All these asteroids are classified...
Near-infrared and mid-infrared observations of the site of the 2009 July 19 impact of an unknown object with Jupiter were obtained within days of the event. The observations were used to assess the properties of a particulate debris field, elevated temperatures, and the extent of ammonia gas redistributed from the troposphere into Jupiter’s stratosphere. The impact strongly influenced the atmosphere...
