The influence of the carbon sorbent surface structure and electron affinity of the molecule on the adsorption of poly- and heterocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons is evaluated. By adjusting the reducing ability of the surface of the carbon material, it is possible to control the adsorption process and the selectivity of the sorbent relative to condensed aromatic systems.

Fuzed Periclase Grain Surface Modification with Coal-Tar Pitch

Results are provided for a study of the chemical composition and microstructure of fuzed periclase grains. A method is proposed for modifying periclase skin grains with coal tar pitch that reduces grain porosity and improves the adhesion of a carbon binder to its surface during carbon-containing refractory manufacture.

Kinetics of Fuzed Periclase Wetting with Coal-Tar Pitch

Adsorption properties of the corundum surface in corundum-based refractories

Distribution of the adsorption sites in fused corundum is studied depending on the fractional composition of the material and specific surface of its finely ground fractions. Treatment of the corundum surface with a phenolic resin is shown to affect, both quantitatively and qualitatively, the distribution of acid-base adsorption sites.

Protective coatings as a means of improving heat resistance of the refractory lining for extra-furnace steelmaking facilities

Protective coatings based on metallic aluminum are developed that can be used to improve the resistance of the refractory lining for extra-furnace steelmaking facilities. By sintering a slurry sprayed on the refractory surface, a heat-resistant gas-impermeable coating containing α-corundum is formed.

Results of an ultrasonic study of the thermal polymerization of phenolic binders in periclase-carbon refractory materials are presented. Following the change in ultrasonic velocity provides an adequate description of the process of polymerization; optimum parameters for conducting the polymerization are determined.

Natural graphites as additions to periclase-carbon refractory materials are considered. The effect of ash components and natural graphites with different specific surface on the oxidizability, mechanical strength, and slag resistance of the refractory material are studied. Low-ash natural graphites with low specific surface are recommended for production of periclase-carbon refractories.
