In this paper, a dual-polarized long slot array antenna is developed for directional networking. The dual-polarization is achieved with 2-D slot array. Additional layer of resistively terminated elements are add to the edge of the antenna to minimize the edge effect. The antenna operating frequency is 2–6 GHz with 70° beamwidth and 6–10 dB gain.
In this paper, we describe the development of a textile-based design of the microwave coupler for vital signs monitoring and measuring changes in lung water contents. We also describe preliminary results from human clinical study using the developed textile coupler. Benchmarking results using an FDA approved medical device, Propaq LT and a blood pressure cuff, have shown the feasibility of accurately...
This paper presents advanced signal processing techniques and associated results for measuring the stroke volume using cardiopulmonary stethoscope (CPS), a new noninvasive multiple vital signs sensor. The CPS is a novel sensor based on RF measurements on patient's chest. It can noninvasively and accurately measure changes in lung water (CLW), heart rate (HR), and respiration rate (RR) as reported...
This paper describes a new microwave-based method and associated measurement system for monitoring multiple vital signs (VS) as well as the changes in lung water content. The measurement procedure utilizes a single microwave sensor for reflection coefficient measurements, hence the name “microwave stethoscope (MiSt),” as opposed to the two-sensor transmission method previously proposed by the authors...
The authors have previously proposed and experimentally verified a microwave medical sensor for monitoring vital signs including the lung water content. It is proposed that, with a careful and medically based designed array of such sensors, both surface and in-depth vital signs can be extracted accurately. For such array design, realistic human models can be used in full-wave simulators with the help...
The MiSt is a novel non-invasive vital signs sensor that can simultaneously measure and extract multiple vital signs parameters including the heart rate, respiration rate, heart waveform, and changes in lung water content from a single microwave measurement. The microwave applicator used to couple the microwave signal to the patient's chest and to measure the reflection from various body tissues play...
In this paper, preliminary human clinical trial results for the Microwave Stethoscope (MiSt) are presented. Benchmarking results using a Food and Drug Administration approved medical device, Propaq LT, have shown the feasibility of accurately detecting the heartbeat and respiration rates from a single measurement using the MiSt. Additionally and more importantly, the MiSt allows the non-invasive capturing...
By using the transmitters of opportunity, passive radar systems allow target detection and tracking without transmitting any RF energy. This approach ensures covert operation of the radar thus decreasing the risks of enemy detection and electronic countermeasures. In a nutshell, the passive radar utilizes the existing broadcast signals from multiple FM radio and TV transmitters, detects backscattered...
A new microwave method for human vital signs measurements is described. The method is based on reflection coefficient measurements, thus realizing the microwave stethoscope vision, and the use of DSP algorithms for extracting vital signs. A unique microwave coupler/sensor with good impedance matching to human skin is designed and the developed measurement procedure is verified experimentally using...
