The integration of active materials on silicon is emerging as a promising field in silicon photonics to improve the performance metrics of key photonic components, in particular active components. Active materials allow tuning their optical properties as function of external stimuli. Amongst them, vanadium dioxide (VO2) has been largely investigated for different applications due to its controllable...
In this paper, we demonstrate moderate slow wave effects in a silicon rib photonic wire Bragg grating at wavelengths around 1.55 mum. Experimental results show group index values up to nG = 72.
We demonstrate high speed modulation based on a compact silicon ring resonator operating in depletion mode. Our device features an electrical small signal bandwidth of approximately 19 GHz, which is the fastest silicon ring resonator modulator reported to date.
Horizontal slot waveguides are becoming a very promising waveguide configuration for silicon photonics nonlinear applications. In this letter, the design of grating couplers for highly efficient coupling between standard single-mode fibers and horizontal slot waveguides is reported. Parameters have been optimized to achieve maximum coupling efficiency for lambda = 1550 nm and transverse magnetic polarization...
A coupling technique for highly efficient coupling between SOI waveguides and standard single-mode fibers is experimentally demonstrated. The proposed coupling structure is CMOS compatible, polarization insensitive and aimed for being integrated with V-groove auto-alignment techniques.
