A rare case of synovial chondromatosis of the ankle joint is presented. The clinical, radiographic and operative findings are described. Removal of the intra-articular loose bodies and cartilaginous nodules attached to the synovium, resulted in relief of pain and restoration of joint function. The significance of the synovial origin of this cartilaginous metaplastic process is discussed.
