An investigation of the photon arrival time spread in cosmic ray induced air showers and its impact on air Cherenkov telescopes for ground-based gamma-ray astronomy will be presented. The photon pulse integration time, discrimination method and coincidence time width influence the threshold and collection area and in turn the flux measurements. A “LEGO” Hybrid Photon Detector – assembled from standard mass-produced vacuum components

Motivated primarily by the MAGIC atmospheric Cherenkov telescope project, we have developed a “LEGO” Hybrid Photon Detector (HPD) comprising excellent focusing properties and protection against positive ion feedback. LEGO-HPD is supposed to be assembled from standard high vacuum components, which insures simplicity in the assembly procedure and reliability of operation.

Fast analog signal transmission for an air Cherenkov photomultiplier camera using optical fibers

A system to demonstrate fast analog signal transmission through optical fibers is presented. The dynamic range of output voltages is 2mV to 1.0V at a bandwidth of 150MHz. The intended future application is to transmit nanosecond photomultiplier pulses over distances of 150m with minimal pulse shape distortions. A measurement of the effective quantum efficiency of some 5″ photomultipliers with bialkali photocathodes
